    It turns out that at least once VPN service provider has compression disabled for OpenVPN 2.5 but has it enabled for outgoing (upload) only for OpenVPN 2.6. The problem isn't 388.2.

    Thanks, I don't. I'm just the client, and I didn't need to have compression enabled until 388.2.

    I also had to switch compression on OpenVPN clients. "Disabled" and "None" no longer work. Everything else does (except Stub and Stub-v2, which the server doesn't support, it seems).
