USB Drive Size, File System Recommendations, and Time Machine on Asus Merlin Routers

Ahh, yes, forgot about halt. @ColinTaylor did mention this in a thread last year: Us old timers like shutdown. I’ll create a link to /sbin/halt ;-)

USB Drive Size, File System Recommendations, and Time Machine on Asus Merlin Routers

As others are warning, USB disks/storage can be problematic on these routers. IMHO, the main culprit is the lack of a “shutdown -h” command. Only reboot. No good way to safely “power off” these routers when you have USB disks attached other than killing processes and syncing/unmounting before...

Tutorial Automatically Reboot Asus Router on Network Failures

I did a similar script a few years ago when I was having loads of connectivity problems. I didn’t use python, just PlainOldBash. @Net-Noob - as @Tech9 mentioned, sometimes it’s the WAN modem and not the router. @copperhead uses a progressive step approach. It is similar (but much more through)...

Entware Pi-hole directly on the router? Yes!

Ahhhh, I can see it now, coming soon… PiHoleMon ;-)

    Chasing my Tail for Tailscale

Since you already have it running - not a great deal. I switched over from Entware tailscale to Tailmon mainly because it makes configurations and update easier. I have tailmon running on both my home main router and another remote (~2300 miles away) router. Site to site. @Viktor Jaep added...

    Chasing my Tail for Tailscale

I second @jksmurf recommendation. Use AMTM for everything. Format a USB storage device, install entware then install Tailmon. Tailmon is much more then a tailscale monitor.

Entware Entware updates have appeared !!!

Agreed that removing the package lines in the file by editing/sedding is not the right way. Maybe you would consider @ColinTaylor recommendation of putting a hold on the package. Maybe during install. If the user un-installs you could also ask if you want the hold released. Not sure how many...

Yes, that would have been a better way. I didn’t remember…

Unable to flash firmware due to bad blocks

As @ExtremeFiretop mentioned, not the end of the road. Most routers will have a few bad blocks. It’s the nature of flash memory devices. The mtd driver manages attempts at correcting (and re-mapping) a bad block. There a numerous free blocks for mtd to remap to. Running mtd_check -b (just get...

Entware Entware updates have appeared !!!

Thanks for the info. I ended up editing the file: /opt/lib/opkg/status And removed the 6 lines that relate to tailscale. I prefer to use TAILMON to take care of the updates.

Entware Entware updates have appeared !!!

I am in a similar boat. I had installed Entwares tailscale before @Viktor Jaep released TAILMON. I use TAILMON to keep tailscale updated. Before I do the Entware updates, I need to remove all knowledge of tailscale in Entware. Tailscale/TAILMON is pretty important to me. I use it to monitor and...

ASUS RT-AC66U_B1 All AiMesh Nodes Stopped Working

Recommending. YazDHCP eliminates the nvram size concern since it uses files to store the reservation information.

ASUS RT-AC66U_B1 All AiMesh Nodes Stopped Working

Maybe some possible filesystem issues? Run AMTM, dc - disk check. Enable it and reboot Then run AMTM and do dcl. (Disk Check Log) to see if it fixed anything.

    Router to Router Routing help

Possibly consider Tailscale instead? There is even an Addon under amtm that installs tailscale and has an option to enable site-to-site mode. It’s called Tailmon.

Missing Kernel Modules moving from AX88U to AX86 Pro

Welcome to the world of Linux development (not what I would call an established company). Over time, the kernel developers make changes/enhancements to the kernel. Sometimes modules become “built in”. Asuswrt-routers span from early 2.6 kernels to 4.1. Here are all the changelogs...

    Disappointed with Merlin

Funny, the vast majority of us say the opposite. If it wasn’t for the Merlin version with all it’s extensions and addons - I would be looking at other routers. As long as Merlin is doing his magic and the numerous individuals contributing great code - I’m sticking with Asus. BTW, don’t let...

Unbound What am I missing in setting up Unbound_Manager

Thanks. Once I removed the LAN DHCP DNS settings, it shows my WAN IP :-)
