Stock fw works perfectly for me. Not one problem since this thread.

    Release RT-AC86U Version 3.0.0.4.384.82072

Working without problems now for nearly 6 weeks. Previously had issues around 5ghz channel 0 bug when using channel 36 or 40; it would cause problems within 5-6 days. Settings that worked: Auto channel selection on both bands, dual band smart connect on.

Asus AC86U 5ghz switched to channel 0, all clients dropped, everything else working fine.

If anybody encounters this thread... the issue is seemingly fixed on stock 82072 with auto channel selection on both bands. It has been 2 weeks of it running without issues. Cannot attest to how long it stays that way and whether it is indeed fixed, but previous run ins with the issue were at 4...

    Release RT-AC86U Version 3.0.0.4.384.82072

Just a report about this fw with my earlier problems of 5ghz crashing (and possibly the same channel 0 problem), setting the channel to auto (on 149) it has been working fine for a week now. No interruptions or unstable connection reports on hours of zoom/webex calls. RAM usage is at 94%...

    Asus Auto Update Experiences

Yes that's what prompted me to post a quick update to this thread since previous accounts only mentioned about this behavior for 81992. I did however enter my PPPOE info in the quick setup so it should know what time it was. Wish I could say the same.. Giving this router one last shot with auto...

    The Uptime Contest

This was my n66u on John's fork. My new 86u is a different story altogether  .

    Asus Auto Update Experiences

I have not yet gone through the entirety of this thread, however during my troubleshooting vpn performance I loaded up 81858 yesterday. During the initial configuration itself a page showed up that 82072 was available giving me only two choices of either updating at night or updating...

    Release RT-AC86U Version 3.0.0.4.384.82072

I have so far not had much luck in restoring the server settings, but yes worth a try :). I guess I will just restore the entire thing if not the server alone. Probably a mini project for the friday eve. Previously I had left HMAC on default on merlin. What is that default?

    Release RT-AC86U Version 3.0.0.4.384.82072

I had seen this article but it is from 2 years ago and I guess it was because of openvpn 2.3.2. Could choosing HMAC sha384 and E HMAC bidirectional have contributed to a ~40% hit? I may have gone a bit overboard. Edit: Also I guess stock only allows for one openvpn server so cannot configure...

    Release RT-AC86U Version 3.0.0.4.384.82072

Yeah you are correct. Btw it is off topic I know, but can anyone confirm that this stock firmware has hardware acceleration enabled for OpenVPN (AES 256 GCM)? I seem to be having heavily reduced performance for my clients. :( It could also be my config though so not sure.

    Release RT-AC86U Version 3.0.0.4.384.82072

Absolutely solid for the 48 hours it has been on mine. Hoping it stays that way.

    Release RT-AC86U Version 3.0.0.4.384.82072

Can the A in FAUPGRADE or auto be an indication of any such setting? :) [FAUPGRADE][auto_firmware_check:(6510)]no need to upgrade firmware

    Release RT-AC86U Version 3.0.0.4.384.82072

Well apparently this is not new.. found this thread from 2018. Also appears this router has been specifically "blessed" with this setting. So merlin fw is not stable with my internet connection (apparently, still testing stock) and stock wont wait for me to install an update. Awesome!

    Release RT-AC86U Version 3.0.0.4.384.82072

I guess also the A in FAUPGRADE. I wouldn't mind it too much though if it's not updating all the time and just stays out of my way, not to mention keeps working reliably-which seems like a far cry for me atm.

AC86U 384.18, every other day or few days internet stops working while the GUI shows it as connected

I read the two 68U's as 86U's the first time :P. Actually I wouldn't mind it auto updating so much too if it stays out of my way and it keeps working reliably. Fingers crossed.

    Release RT-AC86U Version 3.0.0.4.384.82072

I just switched to 82072 from merlin 384.18. The following messages appear in the log; this is the first 24 hrs on this firmware. Aug 23 04:41:10 WATCHDOG: [FAUPGRADE][auto_firmware_check:(6495)]retrieve firmware information Aug 23 04:41:10 WATCHDOG: [FAUPGRADE][auto_firmware_check:(6510)]no...

AC86U 384.18, every other day or few days internet stops working while the GUI shows it as connected

Even though my original post did not mention a reboot, it also did randomly reboot in the middle of a work zoom yesterday and then the issue with internet happened the next morning. This is not stable at all. I have installed stock 82072 to see how it works. Had to reconfigure the openvpn server...

AC86U 384.18, every other day or few days internet stops working while the GUI shows it as connected

I am trying a switch to stock fw for a few weeks to test. The vpn clients will again need to be setup and the settings also seem a lot different from what i see on merlin.. welp.
