    Today went with some trepidation from (RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_)374.43_2-11E1j9527.trx (May 2015) to 374.43_2-38L3j9527.trx (28Feb 2019). Seems fine, ie. much the same. Have nvram/jffs saved, but nothing requiring it has turned up so far. Many thanks!

    Gateway port access.

    If you have a suitable machine (eg. linux), you may be able to find the open ports on the router by: nmap 192.168.1.1 You may recognise one of them (and wonder how many of the other you actually need...).

    A workaround In the end I used a couple of elderly ethernet-over-power-plug gadgets to connect it by ethernet in the distant place the thing has to live. HP specs say the wireless in 802.11b/g. Funnily enough the elderly (2006) Snow Leopard Mac I use in all kinds of insane networking...
