Why is my ping so high? (need help)

Hello.. first of all, I just wanted to say that I'm new to all this and I would appreciate some help :( . Lately I've been getting high ping on a certain game I play.. it only happens when I have my router connected. I have a RT-N66U I'm from the east coast, so whenever I play my game I play...
