Is a single gigabit uplink sufficient for AC 1750/1900 access point?

Yeah, the only reason we paid for gigabit is the upload speeds. My wife and I work from home and we regularly backup from our NAS to offsite. Going from 10Mbps to 1000Mbps made a world of difference. The increased download speed is not really noticeable. Thanks for the feedback about my...

Is a single gigabit uplink sufficient for AC 1750/1900 access point?

I have a desktop in my home environment with a 3x3 card, so it sounds like that could potentially saturate gigabit. I am guessing it’s much more likely if a client on the 2.4 band were simultaneously connecting. What about the situation where a 2x2 client on the 5Ghz band and a 2x2 client in...

Is a single gigabit uplink sufficient for AC 1750/1900 access point?

Hello all, I am looking at installing a few WiFi access points in my house. I’ve been looking some AC1750/1900 class ones. Most offer just a single gigabit uplink, but one or two offer dual gigabit ports that can be aggregated together for extra backhaul bandwidth. My question is “is it...

    Router for Gigabit Internet

The chances of DD-WRT supporting it are slim, but greater than something like OpenWRT. Hardware NAT acceleration is generally a driver level configuration option and is generally only available when using binary blob drivers. Merlin's firmware supports it because he uses the ASUS stock...

    Router for Gigabit Internet

Sounds like the Netgear firmware supported hardware acceleration of NAT (e.g. Cut-through forwarding) and the DD-WRT firmware did not.

    ASUS RT-AC66U OpenVPN & SMB

Samba over openvpn has a number of documented problems. The root issue is that when you use the tun interface, your openvpn configuration has to advertise all routes to other devices. There are generally two ways to get SMB over openvpn working. If you want to use the tun interface then the...

    DIY home router

And I know very few people who still use BitTorrent - probably just as many that limit their internet usage to email and CNN.;) Goes to show how varied the users of the Internet are. I remember reading somewhere that, in North America at least, the majority of traffic is video streaming...

    DIY home router

Actually, the author's point was that he found himself replacing routers more frequently than "when it dies" because his customers were increasing their internet speeds in a regular basis. The p2p example later in the article was how ~15 years ago, the dial-up modems his ISP ran could handle a...

    DIY home router

It's a good article, and illuminating. I definitely think that lays out a better testing methodology for evaluating router performance than what is currently done here. However, I think the article is making a bit of a mountain out of a molehill. The tests are a little over the top. It's...

Does the Switch on the RT-AC66u Support Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP)?

Subject says it all. I'm asking because I was digging around in the html code for Advanced_SwitchCtrl_Content.asp on Merlin's latest firmware build for my AC66u and found the following entry for a table row for the options to be presented on the page: <tr id="lacp_tr" style="display:none;">...

Possible Regression/Undocumented Feature Removal with 380.57 Firmware

I noticed a regression (or maybe an undocumented feature removal) with the latest version of Merlin's firmware and wanted to see if anyone else could confirm or reproduce it or if it is just something unique to my circumstances. The issue is that the tab for enabling and disabling features for...

Can MOCA traverse a cable TV amplifier?

No idea. :-) I have thought of doing just that, but have identified that following issues: The first splitter is outside my house. I have no idea why other than that I suspect because it was the easiest and laziest way to do the cable run. Is there way to put an amplifier in front of the...

Can MOCA traverse a cable TV amplifier?

I took a look at the NetGear range extenders. Their "FastLane" is interesting, and Linksys has some new products that appear to be an even better implementation (Netgear uses one band as backhaul and the other for client connection while Linksys dynamically alternates between the two depending...

Can MOCA traverse a cable TV amplifier?

An access point is definitely what I want to do (if the backhaul is feasible) to extend my WiFi. So the question circles back to the backhaul. Powerline provides a low bandwidth backhaul to my basement (~10 Mbps). The wife won't let me start cutting the walls, floors, etc. to run Cat5/6 from...

Q: Is PowerLine usually faster or slower than a strong wifi signal?

Powerline is very much a "hit or miss" proposition. Powerline speeds decrease over distance and powerline is affected by line noise, which is generated by every electric device plugged into a socket on the electric wires between the two adapters. Signal strength is also lost as you cross...

Can MOCA traverse a cable TV amplifier?

Thanks for the clarification of terms. I meant a WiFi repeater. What I'm trying to do is get some sort of ethernet connection down to the basement to attached a second WiFi router, which I guess would qualify as a Wireless bridge?

Can MOCA traverse a cable TV amplifier?

Actually, the the cited web page is unclear and reads both ways. MoCA FAQs state (emphasis added): This leads to my question: if an amplifier is in the path of MoCA nodes, what makes the amplifier "MoCA compatible" and what MoCA setups would work with an amplifier. Does a MoCA compatible amp...

Can MOCA traverse a cable TV amplifier?

*Editted to Fix Network Diagram* Hello, I lurk on the SNB forums and have read SNB on a regular basis. However, I haven't been able to find an answer to my own small network despite much Googling. Everyone here seems pretty knowledgeable, so I was hoping someone might be able to answer my...

Anyone had any luck with 9 dbi antennas?

Thanks for the link. I didn't see it when I was google searching the topic.

Anyone had any luck with 9 dbi antennas?

I'm already using the latest version of Merlin's firmware for my AC-66u, and it doesn't increase my signal strength or range measurably or noticeably (although I do enjoy the extra features it provides). Hence why I am looking at other alternatives.
