Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.14 is now available for AC models

Easier said than done. Said device is in a remote location.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.14 is now available for AC models

Anyone using the the rt-ac68u as a media extender? Does this version fix the slow speeds - supposedly related to wpa? ref https://www.snbforums.com/threads/rt-ac68u-in-media-bridge-mode-wont-go-faster-than-288-9-mbps-main-router-ax-88u-rssi-ac-68u-is-a-strong-35dbm.74381/

    Beta [Fork] Asuswrt-Merlin 374 LTS release 53D1

Impressive! Running the latest beta (2022-08) on a r6700 that had it's board id modded to r7000 and cfe flashed from the xwrt thread. Using device as media extender. Connecting to a tplink eap670 AP which has ssid security set to wpa2 & wpa3 mixed mode. Xwrt on same device was having slow...

    Asus RT-AX88U Pro

Have you priced out an orbi kit lately? Some of their offerings are $600-1000+, and still locked down with the garbage firmware.

    Asus RT-AX88U Pro

I think the more advanced users will at some point have to rip off the bandaid and move to a router/firewall that allows you more control - ie *sense, unfi, omada, etc. For the first you will need to either get one of the netgate devices or run your own on a white box. There is some learning...

    Asus RT-AX88U Pro

Just open both in separate tabs and go down the settings list.

    RT-AC68U in Media Bridge mode won't go faster than 288.9 Mbps. Main router = AX-88U. RSSI @ AC-68U is a strong -35dBm.

Tested this theory. Slow downs experienced when AP SSID set to wpa2/wpa3-personal as below. For WPA-personal, there's also options for wpa/wpa2-psk, wpa-psk, wpa2-psk. Dropping it down to wpa2-psk fixed the speed issue with more current firmwares (386 branch). However, in performance...

    RT-AC68U in Media Bridge mode won't go faster than 288.9 Mbps. Main router = AX-88U. RSSI @ AC-68U is a strong -35dBm.

The other end is an AP (tplink eap670 to be exact). No changes were made to any settings on it. The only difference with the asus unit was flashing different firmware (either freshtomaro or john's fw). From a factory reset state, the asus unit is put into media bridge mode where the only...

@RMerlin Any thoughts on why the newer fw (ie 386.12_4) is seeing a slow down when in media bridge mode compared to older fw's?

    RT-AC68U v4 Discontinued by Asus

I think the "discontinued" caught my attention. Didn't even know there was a v2+ of this thing. My apologies.

Or add 'em to the pile of wrt54gs's I have :)

    RT-AC68U v4 Discontinued by Asus

That's amazon for you. I take most amazon reviews with a grain (or kilo) of salt. Hard to tell which device the review actually applies to. The reviewer(s) also failed to indicate which firmware version they were using and whether devices were in standalone mode or adopted to the omada...

    RT-AC68U v4 Discontinued by Asus

I finally dumped the rt-ac68u as AP after a number of years. Have a number of ax200/201/210/211 clients around the house. Wanted better wifi performance. Tried the ax-88u pro as it supports vlans. The implementation was extremely poor, clunky. Returned it. Got a EAP670 for $100 less which...

    RT-AC68U in Media Bridge mode won't go faster than 288.9 Mbps. Main router = AX-88U. RSSI @ AC-68U is a strong -35dBm.

Where are you turning this off? On the rt configured in media bridge mode? I'm using a rt-ac68u in media bridge mode to a EAP670. All testing below done using iperf3 on local lan with server running on a wired gigabit connection. With the latest (as of 20231209) asus merlin firmware, speeds...

    Asus RT-AX88U Pro

After a few days with the AP, i'm seeing speeds upwards of gigabit (my line limit) if the antenna is properly placed and using 160 mhz channels. The firewall pc has one 2.5gb port but that's in use right now. Eventually I'll reshuffle things when I get pfsense installed. Testing outside, 150'...

    Asus RT-AX88U Pro

None of this really appeals to me. I don't see the AP, and if it has led's, they are shut off. Re asus, maybe with enough feedback these additional features will come to fruition. Some 6 years ago I got fed up with all the limitations of the AIO stuff. Bought a small qotom box with multiple...

    Asus RT-AX88U Pro

The intention was to use it as an AP for some time, then repurpose as a router in some other application after I upgrade to wifi supporting 6ghz. Also fact that it has ssh/console ticks an important box. Firmware on the asus site for the 88u pro is nearly 5 months old. Doesn't say it's beta...

    Asus RT-AX88U Pro

That was my assumption as well. I see no reason why vlans can't work in AP mode. This arrangement has been working fine for a number of years in a RT configured through console. It's pain to do so, but doable. I've got a new desktop in an unwired area, so wifi is the only option. Figure it's...

    Asus RT-AX88U Pro

^^Relatively useless to me as I'm running sophos utm at the moment, migrating to one of the *sense flavors in a few months. Ordered a tplinnk EAP670. Based on specs that should provide what I need (~1500sq rectangular house).

    Asus RT-AX88U Pro

To answer my own question, NO! Picked up the unit today at MC, applied latest fw. Gui had vlan option settings up until I changed mode to AP. A popup came on indicating "pro" options are not available in AP mode. Of course, this can be added to software. So much for "PROsumer" class. Oh well...
