    Apple Exiting Wi-Fi Router Biz

Of course it is. And spending some father-son time with one of my loved ones adds positively to my own contribution to the treatment process as well  Btw, currently waiting to be picked up for transport to the hospital...

    Apple Exiting Wi-Fi Router Biz

Seeing your enthusiasm and recommendations regarding AirPort Extreme made me buy one while I stayed at the Radium Hospital in Oslo for my first therapy. :) It was delivered last Friday and I'm planning to spend some quality time with my younger son next time I'm back home between chemo...

Confessions of a pfSense Newbie ...

If one makes a local version of a system configuration file, e.g. loader.conf -> loader.conf.local, is the original file loaded first and then the code in the local version, or just the local version? Ole

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

Yes, I scanned the router installed by my ISP who has configured the router. I understand now, when I scan my Ubuntu Desktop IP address (which is what I should have done in the first place) I get the expected result: There is a lot to learn, but I enjoy it so much. :) Ole

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

Sfx, I installed Nmap according to your how-to and ran "sudo nmap -v -A 192.168.10.1". The output was as follows: I was expecting to see an entry for the samba service which was running on Ubuntu with a connection established from my MacBook Pro. What am I missing? Ole

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

Thanks for the clarification. I commented the maxretry line because the same line in the how-to was commented. You might want to edit the "# maxretry = 6" line in the how-to. Ole

Yes, I see that now, sorry. Ok, I edited the following lines in jail.local section [DEFAULT] as follows: [DEFAULT] ignoreip = 127.0.0.1/8 192.168.10.0/24 bantime = 7200 findtime = 300 # maxretry = 5 Hope I´ve understood the how-to correctly now? Ole

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

How does the mechanism of creating local versions of conf/def files to preserve changes work? Is adding ".local" to the service name like "jail.local" enough or should ".local" be added to the name of the conf/def file e.g. "jail.conf.local"? Shall the local jail file be edited with the changes...

Sfx, Is there a difference between the "admin" group and the built-in "sudo" group? I found this on superuser.com: When I execute "sudo groups ole" I get the following list of groups: ole : ole adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare admin The adm, sudo and admin groups seem to be...

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

Sfx, The command "sudo useradd <newuser>" does not create the home directory for the new user unless I add the "-m" option. I checked the "/etc/login.defs" file which has DEFAULT_HOME set to Yes, but does not include a line for enabling CREATE_HOME. I´m running Ubuntu Desktop 16.04 in a...

    [Talk] - pfSense 2.3 release/upgrades

Yes, I love it. However, I´m still having problems with Avahi working with pfSense on my MacBook. While it works fine initially after the service is started, it stops working after 5-10 minutes. I´ve checked the status of the service in the WebGUI and Avahi is running, but I´m not able to access...

    [Talk] - pfSense 2.3 release/upgrades

Sfx, I´m an idiot. I had installed Avahi, but NOT enabled it! After enabling Avahi, the host-name is resolved on my MacBook. Again, thank you so much for your kind help. Ole

    [Talk] - pfSense 2.3 release/upgrades

Sfx, What could cause my pfSense hostname not to be resolved? The ip address works fine for accessing the WebGUI and establishing a ssh connection. Using the host-name instead of the host-ip fails. host-ip: 10.0.0.1 host-name: ole-pfsense.home Ole
