ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 Wireless-AC5300 Tri-Band Gaming Router Reviewed

Hello folks...interesting posts!! I presently own an Asus RT-AC68U and am contemplating getting an RT-AC5300 or a GT-AC5300 to allegedly solve my poor VPN performance. At present, I run a dedicated Cat6e line from my router to a downstairs 8-port Gigabit switch (80 feet of cable) which feeds...

ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 Wireless-AC5300 Tri-Band Gaming Router Reviewed

I have always just logged into my browser by Firefox, or whatever, on my cell phone just as I would on my computer. Great for activating/deactivating VPN at the router...

Which way should I attempt to go - retail NAS or DIY?

I think I just found out that my Yamaha RX-V671 A/V receiver might have a lot to do with making playback of various codecs possible, since everything has to pass thru the receiver via HDMI on the way to the TV (also HDMI) Is this correct? And if so, making playback of the original movie codecs...

Which way should I attempt to go - retail NAS or DIY?

I watched the YouTube video. He didn't mention if he had the Plex Media Player installed on his laptop. And if not, he is using the Plex Media Server from the Asustor 202TE to do all the work - which we all know it can't. But I appreciate the time you took to look up my NAS in the first place.

Which way should I attempt to go - retail NAS or DIY?

Have no idea if the Plex Media Server which is installed on my pathetic 2-bay NAS can access files stored elsewhere on the LAN

Which way should I attempt to go - retail NAS or DIY?

I give up...you guys win. My crappy Asustor AS-202TE with its pathetic Intel® ATOM™ 1.2GHz Dual-Core Processor has Plex Media Server installed on it. And as I have said many times, my laptop, which has Plex Media Player installed on it, can play 1080P videos from the HDDs in the NAS, no...

Which way should I attempt to go - retail NAS or DIY?

I have looked at so many retail NAS boxes my head spins. I am guided by PLEX's compatibility guide for a NAS box in regard to transcoding issues. It seems the ones which get the passing grade are very expensive - which is the initial problem. YES OR NO - Does the performance of the CPU on the...

Which way should I attempt to go - retail NAS or DIY?

Nice tip on old units and drivers... I am still a bit lost on RAID. I understand the configurations (RAID 0,1,5,6,10, etc). I do not understand the hardware or software side of things. (Am reading this article) Quick question to all...a barebones DAS enclosure can be connected directly to a...

Which way should I attempt to go - retail NAS or DIY?

I tried playing a few videos using DLNA from my Blu-ray. It worked once (I think) but once I added my content to the already existing content (bringing it up to just over 3TB) the DLNA wouldn't even connect. Haven't tried it via Roku, but that doesn't matter. I need to be able to view it with...

Which way should I attempt to go - retail NAS or DIY?

Keep up the good work, Colin. You are able to speak my kindergartenese... Phones and tablets do not play into this at all...other than using my android phone as a mouse for my laptop. I am not using the Roku at all. The interface (Plex channel) is terrible. I would rather not do video...

Which way should I attempt to go - retail NAS or DIY?

Colin, thanks again for taking the time... Budget is $500 I thought (or have read in other forums) that running VMs was necessary for apps like CouchPotato, and a few others that venture forth and retrieve. It was also pointed out that running these VMs would require additional CPU power and...

Cake, Sorry, but have no idea what a raspi b is...thumbs?? MySQL??? DLNA not viable...1080P is what my TV is and will be for a long time (I hope) A listing of my devices will be forthcoming as soon as I catch up on the replies...

Which way should I attempt to go - retail NAS or DIY?

I agree Colin. Transcoding and storage must be the closest possible. A super NAS makes this easy, but as I have said a few times now, they are super expensive. Perhaps a DAS connected to a good computer. If I had to run a few virtual machines (apparently I must) and stream from a maximum of...

Which way should I attempt to go - retail NAS or DIY?

I would like to benefit from this forum's knowledge base, a selfish request, I know. My ultimate goal is to be able to download content, then store, organize, and update it automatically for eventual streaming to my devices. I want to be able to transcode the most demanding codecs (as I...

Best Router for fastest VPN speeds

Interesting thread...My post is similar to the OP. Please forgive me if any of my questions fall into the "stupid idiot" category. :) I have an Asus RT-AC68U router and would like to get the best/economic VPN provider for security and privacy, and the fastest speed possible (presently running...
