    I think you're overthinking it. Most users who install Merlin are going to be the tech types who will quickly Google the answer if they are at all concerned about the temperatures they see. The rest? Most probably don't even notice anything to worry about.

    If you're worried about temperature, one option is to turn off one of the radios (if possible). Nothing in my home requires 5GHz, so I turned off the 5GHz radio and the CPU temperature dropped from 80C to 75C, giving me quite a bit more headroom.

    joegreat has already posted overclocking instructions, but suffice to say that you're not likely to get anywhere close to a 20Mbps VPN connection. My 1000MHz dual-core RT-AC68U router is CPU limited and gets just over 20Mbps, and I doubt your router can even operate at the 1000MHz processor...

    I can answer this part. Connecting via a VPN client on my desktop, my download speed is 67Mbps (ISP limited). The VPN client on my 800MHz RT-AC68U manages 17Mbps (CPU limited), and when overclocked to 1000MHz, over 20Mbps. All with Merlin's latest firmware. Whether that's a big enough...
