    AC86U died?

I work in the tech industry and had experiences in such decision making process. I just considered Asus handled this poorly. - You knew you product(s) had a known defect - The cost to recall might be too high so you took a calculated risk betting most won't fail within the warranty period (but...

    AC86U died?

Alright. Just called Asus and got transferred to the out of warranty department. The lady wouldn't do anything other than software troubleshooting. She suggested me to send the router back for $15 shipping + $85 diagnosis fee + labor (can you believe this for a router selling new for ~$150?)...

    AC86U died?

Thanks OE! It doesn't hurt to give it a try. If I need to buy another router, what will be the recommended model? I know this is an ASUS forum. I was debating between AX86 and RAX120. I know these two are not really apple to apple comparison but the AC86U died only after two years shakes my...

    AC86U died?

@OE yes, it's a 2018 made in China model. I also double checked it had exactly a half lit LAN4 LED!!! What shall I do? I bought it at the end of 2018 so it just passed two years warranty mark. Guess I am just unlucky.....

    AC86U died?

Today my AC86U died all of a sudden. None of the LED lit up. Tried all reset etc. and none worked. Anyone has similar experience? The router is just a little bit over two years old.

How to improve WiFi Range of AC86U router

L&LD. Thanks for the prompt response and now you left me hanging :) Unfortunately I don't have the luxury to give 3' free space all around my AC86U, there is a drywall right next to the router but hopefully that doesn't block too much signal (and this drywall is not the one with the refrig...

How to improve WiFi Range of AC86U router

Hijacking the thread for a related question: I know the wifi signal travels in a donut shape. Why do we need to put three antennas (I have a AC86U) in the shape of \ | / for a single floor house then? wouldn't | | | be more efficient? I have the option to put the AC86U either at the...

Advice on better Wifi range coverage for my house?

This will also save my itch to buy a Wifi6 router for a while . One of my friends recently bought a NG RAX120 kept telling me how great the coverage the RAX120 offers, guess I can now put that thought to bed and patiently wait for another year or so. LOL

Advice on better Wifi range coverage for my house?

They just arrived this afternoon. I replaced them with two of my AC86U factory antennas (position A and position C) First of all, I did notice some gain improvement and below are before and after data analysis (I also noticed the 5G channel jumped from 149 to 157 after reboot): iMac (3x3ac)...

Advice on better Wifi range coverage for my house?

Just bought two Alfa APA-M25s and plan to try them when they arrive. Will post the results later. Hopefully I can get better signal coverage in some specific areas.

Advice on better Wifi range coverage for my house?

I wasn’t paying too much attention as I thought you were recommending an AiMesh solution. Panel antenna is definitely a great idea! Will check it out to see if I can find a similar 2.4/5G one in US. BTW, will such panel antenna pose any health risk?

Advice on better Wifi range coverage for my house?

Hi K-2SO, thank you very much for your detailed instructions. I have tried Freshtomato 2020.2/2020.5 and even the Shibby 1.28, and got the same results. I am attaching a screenshot of the overview page for your reference (from Shibby 1.28) - no matter what I do, the signal quality at the bottom...

Advice on better Wifi range coverage for my house?

Thanks for the recommendation! My confidence for the mesh system still hasn't recovered from my past experience with NG Orbi 5300 system - my house isn't that big (2000 sqft) and even one Orbi can cover up to 2K sqft, having three units running ended up causing a lot of unnecessary roaming, and...

Advice on better Wifi range coverage for my house?

As my weekend home project, I flashed the R7000 to Freshtomato 2020.5. However, the R7000 kept refusing to join the 5G band of AC86U. I watched a few youtube video and checked the learntomato tutorial. Neither Wireless Ethernet Bridge nor AP+WDS work. I don't want to try dd-wrt. Below is...

Advice on better Wifi range coverage for my house?

Thanks for the tips. I just flashed my AC86U to 384.14.2 and will let it sit there for a while (currently using my R7000 as the backup router to just keep a few critical devices up and running). How does the 5G wireless backhaul work? I know how wired AP works but have never tried wireless...

Advice on better Wifi range coverage for my house?

Hi L&LD, I have been reading a lot of your responses and thank you very much for the tips. Two questions: 1. I have had issue with one of the 81XXX FW with random device dropping so I rolled back to 45717 and never had time to tinker :) What RMerlin FW version will you recommend for AC86U...

Advice on better Wifi range coverage for my house?

Issue: Everyday I noticed two Nest security cameras (both on 2.4G, -77dBm and -79dBm ish, both located in the far end of the router) consistently dropped off the network for short period of time then came back. Not a huge deal but just made me wonder what else I can do to improve the coverage...

    AC86U 5G SSID occasionally disappears

After reading the thread on the 45149 FW update, I looked my log and did see on average 2x "kernel crash" (or whatever you call it) per hour so I decided to downgrade the FW to the 99 version. Over the last 24 hours or so I haven't experienced any 5G device drop issue or whatsoever and now I...

    AC86U 5GHz Randomly Dropping

I am having the same issue and below is the post (I probably should change the "occasionally" to "frequently"). However, there are some 5G devices are still connected well (TV, Google Home Hub etc.) but all cameras dropped, and when I conduct speedtest on 5G (if I could connect) the speed will...
