Security -- Beating to Quarters on DSM 7

Yeah, I think a VPN for the people who need it is appropriate. The fact it's only happened once is a pretty good indicator of it not being low hanging fruit. I figured I'd have found out immediately if it was a problem but it actually took over 18 months.

Security -- Beating to Quarters on DSM 7

Yeah, I see router attacks all the time, and I don't even know if Windows Popup messages are a thing anymore but they were pervasive, but Synology aimed attacks seem to be new (at least for me). This is the first time in opening that port 18 months ago that I've gotten an automated login bot...

Security -- Beating to Quarters on DSM 7

I just got a mega bleep ton of login attempts alerted to me this morning. Someone from Lausanne Switzerland 179.43.145.42, but it appears to be a VPN originating from privatelayer.com. Check your login attempts folks. And disable the default accounts.

    Help replacing ISP provided modem/router

I'm aware of Omada. It's just targeted at a different market than the OP asked for. I mean, how many users new to SNB should be going straight to that level of product? My point is that nobody goes for the consumer TP-link stuff in their homes and is proud of the decision. And if they need...

    Help replacing ISP provided modem/router

To be brutally honest, I'm just trying to address the OP's concerns, and in all fairness, you've made a better point for Asus than I did: OP didn't ask too much about performance. He did care about features, and like you point out, Asus offers them, if not through its own firmware, but Merlin's...

    Help replacing ISP provided modem/router

I might suggest its biased for a reason, but again, hey, you do you as well :-) Certainly from what the OP asked about, in the ASUS vs Netgear debate and anything aimed at a tech savvy user looking for good consumer level stuff, the existence of the Merlin custom firmware (and Asus' endorsement...

    Help replacing ISP provided modem/router

You looking for BE or AX level of wifi? I would definitely shy away from Netgear (paid use for features) and lean towards Asus. If you get an Asus Router that runs 3006 firmware, you can create multiple VLAN's including ones aimed for IoT devices (that's all of their BE stuff and *some* AX...

Development news - reworked Connections log

I was thinking something like this but more along the lines of, "Merlin's releases are actually MORE recent than Asus' own?!". If you want proof that Asus is fine with this effort, there is the smoking gun.

Development news - reworked Connections log

Dumb and only tangentially related question. I noticed that the latest of the the merlin firmware is based on a GPL that appears to be more recent than what I can get from asus' support site. Is that my imagination?

    Managed switch with https support?

Yeah, I have a 24 port SG-200 at home. It's long since EOL and still massive overkill, but it was being retired from the place that had it and so the price was all of "Hey, you want this?". It's staying in my rack until 10g shows up or until I sell the house because you know someone will want it...

    Managed switch with https support?

Any Cisco managed Switch from the discontinued SG-200 series (level 2) and SG-300 (layer 3) or more recent does this. If this is all you care about you can probably find a suitable model on ebay.

News RT-AC68U End of Life Announced by Asus

As was mentioned waaaay upthread, running DD-WRT in a business setting is a bad idea. I'm willing to spend less than the cost of a PC periodically if it comes with support for the intended use. It's cheaper than upgrading the pfsense-PC with the new tech as it comes out. Once support ends, it...

Asus RT-AC68U as file server / very humble media drive connection?

1TB will be more than enough for you to notice the behavior. I am not certain, but I believe I was doing this with 250GB drives. Keep an eye on in-use memory. I found myself never very comfortable looking at how much free memory it had, and having to reboot the router about once a week due to...

Asus RT-AC68U as file server / very humble media drive connection?

How big of a drive are we talking about? I did this briefly with unused SSD's that had initially shipped with laptops and discovered the more storage I had attached to the router, more memory was used by the router to manage it, and on an RT-AC86U, it was noticeable enough for it to NOT be a...

    Asus Warranty Process ?

And I just checked on more recent stuff from Sony and thankfully, they don't appear to do this anymore. My PS/2 though, I definitely remember it... not that I'm bitter.

    Asus Warranty Process ?

My understanding is that the RMA replacement carries the remainder of the original warranty for what you bought or 90 days, whichever is longer. For purposes of comparison, the last time I checked, Sony's standard warranty on pretty much everything they sold new (TV's, PlayStations, etc) was 90...

what's the current guidance with using merlinwrt 3006 on mesh nodes?

Before i acquired a NAS i had a couple of old drives plugged into the usb via an enclosure as shared storage and noticed memory usage went up a fair bit, proportionate with the amount of attached storage. It was enough that even after getting the NAS and retiring those old drives, i actually...

    Name. That. Problem

Got a machine that periodically loses its ability to see anything. Log file when it happens is certainly indicative of something wrong, but what? If it matters, it is using a wired connection to an AIMesh Node (an RT-AC86U) that is itself configured as a wired backhaul. As expected, the main...

    AX86uPRO- updated to 3006.102.4_0 disaster on 2025-05-16

log files? Surely RMerlin would love to see what went wrong. The rest of us are merely curious.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 3006.102.4 is now available

Incompatible sounds like an overbid. Not supported sounds more accurate. I've had no problems with it. There was a time where I found rebooting the router through it was more reliable than via the http gui
