RT-AX88U Pro installation from RT-AC68U config files

Didn't think the new router "increased" max speed per se, but thought the memory/CPU of the old router might have decreased it. Noticeably faster though and happy, regardless of the lack of magic. Thanks! :)

RT-AX88U Pro installation from RT-AC68U config files

Wow! Had some time to run some tests. Here's the comparison between the speeds, with literally almost everything else the same. Using the internet speed internal test (site, level, d/l, u/l, ping, jitter), here are the results: 2024/2/21 Cox-LV Super 293.19 10.52 8.34 2.27...

RT-AX88U Pro installation from RT-AC68U config files

The goal was to make my new router look exactly like the old one (externally), so nobody would have to change their configuration. (They did have to reboot, in the end.) Here's what I did, in case anyone needs to do this in the future: Booted normally, base configuration with stock firmware...

RT-AX88U Pro installation from RT-AC68U config files

Perfect. Exactly what I hoped. I never put anything in from the Web interface anyway, once I went to the /jffs partition, but like your logic to test out how it works. Clean install for web configuration. Unlike you, historical "who did what" is irrelevant to me, so I'm making the rest my...

RT-AX88U Pro installation from RT-AC68U config files

I'm not sure what you mean in this case. Things like my hosts file are just text files that specify my hosts. I'm asking if hte new router firmware still implements these special config files. Not sure what I would do other than straight copy these text config files...

RT-AX88U Pro installation from RT-AC68U config files

Long time user of Merlin on the Asus RT-AC68U unit. Because of the oncoming obsolescense, been tracking the RT-AX88U Pro for months. It's at its all time low of $219.99, so I took the plunge today. It arrives on Wednesday. As a result, I'm now focused on how I will install / configure my...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.14 is now available for AC models

Thanks for the knowledge and love, guys! :D Figured I'd ride out the year and risk it, but much happier doing it with insight and support. No new Wifi6 devices here, so no rush to upgrade. Merlin forever! <3

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.14 is now available for AC models

Loaded 386.14 with a dirty install over 386.13 on my RT-AC68U. That router is still performing like a rock star. Still torn whether to ride out my AC68U even post support in 2025, since it's working just fine, or bite the bullet I probably eventually have to eat, with the RT-AX88U Pro on sale...

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.13 beta is now available for AC models

Fair enough. Done. Thanks. :) I installed the 386.13.beta1 here on the AC68U and so far so good after a couple of hours. Nothing noteworthy to report after a dirty install.

Merlin "End of Life" for 386.x firmware implications

Seeing that my RT-AC68U will be able to run "new" Merlin releases only through 2024, I assume that means my router will technically work, but eventually be vulnerable to security issues, or just that there won't be new Merlin features? Not sure exactly what "end of life" means, but it doesn't...

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.13 beta is now available for AC models

Just saw the new release and will install the beta over the weekend and report results. Seeing that my RT-AC68U will be able to run "new" Merlin releases only through 2024, I assume that means my router will technically work, but eventually be vulnerable to security issues, or just that there...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.12_6 is now available for AC models

Successfully installed a dirty upgrade on RT-AC68U, on top of 386.12.4 and ran for over a day without problems. This evening, for some reason, wifi just stopped working. Ethernet direct connect just fine. Was able to reboot the router and everything seems back to normal. My 12.4 ran...

hosts / dnsmasq / Android coordination

I originally read the 386.11 note, but was on the "ain't broke, don't fix" plan at the time. Ran it with confidence and happiness! I think it will even gain back more memory if/when I do a clean firmware upgrade, but happy for the free gain. :D (latest: 386.11_0) size: 57986 bytes (7550 left)...

hosts / dnsmasq / Android coordination

Also, in case it matters, here's a minor section of my Network Map, which shows Bard in the list.

hosts / dnsmasq / Android coordination

I undid all changes from my Google suggestion page. Back to DHCP, not static. FYI, here's the NVRAM results from the last two versions of firmware. Looks smaller, but 386.10 was a virgin reinstall and 386.11 was an upgrade. (latest: 386.11_0) size: 59949 bytes (5587 left) (latest: 386.10_0)...

hosts / dnsmasq / Android coordination

Aha!!! I think Google and your sentence have gotten my 95% of the way there! https://www.gadgets360.com/mobiles/features/how-to-change-dns-server-on-android-1672117 I've manually set my IP address on my tablet to the one DHCP assigns it locally in the router (192.168.1.41). I've set the...

hosts / dnsmasq / Android coordination

My Asus model is the RT=AC68U and I have many earlier threads where the answer was "put it in the .add files" to conserve NVRAM. Mission accomplished and it's been working fine this way for years. I have 80 machines in the hosts (Bard is just my media server) file and I think the .add files...

hosts / dnsmasq / Android coordination

On my Asus/Merlin router, I have both a hosts.add and dnsmasq.conf.add file configured. In them I have the two respective lines to define a local server: 192.168.1.15 Bard dhcp-host=AA:AA:AA:AA:AA:AA,Bard,192.168.1.15,1440 The server Bard is well configured as per the router. It shows up...

Request: move custom_clientlist, dhcp_staticlist, and dhcp_hostnames from NVRAM to jffs

Took me a while to figure out how to do this, so figured I'd answer my own question, in case anyone else has the same issue. Hope this helps! :D =====Custom logo icon for each router device ***** /jffs/usericon/ icon specifications - named <mac-id>.log - resize 85x85 resolution...

Request: move custom_clientlist, dhcp_staticlist, and dhcp_hostnames from NVRAM to jffs

Installed 386.10 with a hard factory reset and followed your instructions. Everything is (almost) great. Put all jffs addons/configs/scripts manually back editing them each with vi. Fully functional and as it was before (almost). I wanted the /jffs/usericon logos back. I created them first...
