I'm preparing to publish a user script, are there any rules I need to follow?

As perhaps the leading candidate for the position of resident privacy nutcase, I would like to offer a few generalized thoughts. I don’t know much about mac addresses beyond their specific hardware identifier origin so ... 1) I am totally thrilled when skilled individuals think about privacy...

    Asuswrt-Merlin mirror site available

Speaking just for myself and not trying to convince anyone of anything, I like the atmosphere here. And the tougher the crowd, the better I like it. Up to a point, of course. And I continue to be incredibly grateful to all of the people who have built this wonderfully helpful firmware, addons...

Tutorial How to monitor DNS traffic in real-time

Yet another superb example of why this is such an incredibly helpful place. Thank you!

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.4 is now available

Here to report a flawless and effortless dirty u/g a few moments ago from 386.3_2 to 386.4. Now to do a clean install to the ax86u (which has been waiting for this), sweep off the cobwebs, and get to running that. Many packets full of thanks to Merlin and all.

Thinking of leveraging Scarf for download stats for my addons

Agree completely (as I tried to say), and thank you for your work. I think you may have misunderstood what I was trying to say.

Thinking of leveraging Scarf for download stats for my addons

I don't like being tracked. My position on this is probably among the more extreme that you might find. I do not apologise for that. That said, I have no problem at all with what you are suggesting because your suggestion is to track your addons and not to track any specific individual. Also...

request for general ideas related to TOR

Thanks for the link. It seems quite clear that your interpretation is correct. Still, it doesn't seem appropriate to me right now. Maybe I'll change my opinion after I've thought about it for a while.

request for general ideas related to TOR

Yes. I have no doubt that many people will have very strongly held positions about this, as do I. (Un?)Fortunately, I doubt very much that SNB will be seen as the proper place for discussing those positions. So I won't. :)

request for general ideas related to TOR

On rereading what I wrote, I am ashamed at how poorly I expressed what I was trying to say. I apologize. I don’t think I can repair the flaws in it in a reasonable number of words so I would prefer not to make the attempt right now.

request for general ideas related to TOR

I know that not everyone agrees with me but I do not believe either privacy or anonymity are binaries, in which case both statements can be true.

You know what: These are the kinds of comments that I find extremely helpful and thought provoking. Thank you. And thank you to garycnew for the welcome and the pointers to his tutorials, which I have happily placed on my todo (aka the where did I put that anyway) list. I am not a coder but I'm...

Some does, yes certainly, but not all. You make valid points, and I have some understanding of your excellent analogy. I believe I made some valid points as well.

request for general ideas related to TOR

I thought I had. See here: What am I failing to disclose? (Actually, I'm more interested in the generalities than the specifics atm, but these are the ones I would be most concerned about.) I think I may have overemphasized the "sharing" aspect of it simply by mentioning it. While not...

request for general ideas related to TOR

You gentlemen are challenging my thinking and I thank you for that. This is likely true for much of the general context existing at the end points (on the internet or in real life). I don't believe it's necessarily true that privacy must necessarily evaporate between those end points, along the...

request for general ideas related to TOR

If you don't mind my asking, what, if anything, do you do? I am not one who finds the "if you have nothing to hide" line of argument persuasive.

request for general ideas related to TOR

There is no way I can keep a determined criminal out of my house, especially with the laws against so-called fortified buildings, but I still put a lock on my door. Not that it offers much protection - it took me less than five seconds to get in after I came home without my key to a locked door...

request for general ideas related to TOR

I have been thinking about how to answer your question as it relates to where the best place to run TOR might be (router and/or firewall and/or browser) and what characteristics of Merlin's implementation might be suitable for that. Because of the complexity of privacy as such, I guess the best...

request for general ideas related to TOR

I know that this is good advice, and thank you. For the moment I am doing it anyway, with some disquiet, having taken some small steps to mitigate a bit of the risk. Except for the connection itself, there is no sharing intended. I mentioned that characteristic of my setup only because I...

request for general ideas related to TOR

Ok, I admit it, I am a privacy nutcase. I recognize that privacy is hard and complex, some people may think that the available gains are not worth the effort and sometimes what a person does intending to enhance privacy actually diminishes it. I’m also not very good at it. Nevertheless, I think...

scMerlin scMerlin v2 - Service and script control menu for AsusWRT-Merlin

I would be happy to put a stamp on a bill and entrust it to the post office (don't do paypal or ilk so I'd need a snail mail addy). Might even splurge and use an envelope. On a slightly more serious note, there is no way I could afford to properly pay all the people whose work I am using. Don't...
