Router replacement frequency? And a recommendation request

You are doing the right thing. Don’t let Google harvest your data so easily. Use a good router without spyware (avoid mainland Chinese brands as well), and don't forget about ad blockers and privacy-focused DNS services like NextDNS. BTW, privacy is one of the reasons I prefer the Apple...

    Wireguard benchmark test on RT-BE96U

Here's the result on the RT-BE88U when connecting to my single-core high-frequency VPS via WireGuard. It’s using less than half of my ISP’s 2.5G bandwidth, but it’s still pretty impressive :)

Access webgui only from inside wireguard network ? [SOLVED]

That’s correct. The allow rule only applies to the WireGuard interface. Inbound Firewall: Block admin@router:/tmp/home/root# iptables-save | grep WGCI :WGCI - [0:0] -A INPUT -j WGCI -A WGCI -i wgc1 -j DROP Inbound Firewall: Allow admin@router:/tmp/home/root# iptables-save | grep WGCI :WGCI -...

Access webgui only from inside wireguard network ? [SOLVED]

I have a similar use case and have created the following scripts: /jffs/scripts/nat-start #!/bin/sh # Example mappings to forward SMB, Web UI, and a LAN device port via WireGuard # Format: EXTERNAL_PORT:LOCAL_DEVICE_IP:INTERNAL_PORT # For the Web UI, you only need this line: #...

    RT-BE88U ethernet problem

I’m experiencing a similar issue with my Raspberry Pi 5 and a 2.5G port. However, it works fine when plugged into a 1G port. Also, my Apple TV, which is connected to a 1G port, doesn’t have this issue. You could try this, it might help. An Apple TV doesn’t need more than 1G anyway.

Does the Synology RT6600AX block a particular adult site?

I agree, but I don’t think DoH is the biggest problem here. What if children install VPN apps? What if they enable iCloud Private Relay? What if they switch to mobile data? If they don’t know how to do any of this, you can easily disable DoH on their devices, and everything will work as...

Looking for feedback: Anyone considering AiCloud important to them?

A router is a device that connects computer networks to each other. All other features, like SMB, are more suited to dedicated servers. These features are included in routers mostly for marketing reasons - they work fine for basic use cases but fall short for advanced needs. For example, if you...

Looking for feedback: Anyone considering AiCloud important to them?

Because it requires constant patches and updates to the web server software, and still poses some level of risk. This makes sense for banks, as they are designed to be accessible from anywhere, but it doesn’t make much sense for a home router, which is meant to be a local device.

Does the Synology RT6600AX block a particular adult site?

Actually, DoH support (via nextdns-cli) was the main reason I started using Merlin a few years ago. I like DoH because it blends seamlessly with other HTTPS traffic, giving me more privacy and fewer ways for anyone to track, control, or restrict my online activities. I wouldn’t call those...

Looking for feedback: Anyone considering AiCloud important to them?

Exposing the login page of your router to the internet is never a good idea, no matter what gear you use. If you really need remote access, you should use a VPN.

Looking for feedback: Anyone considering AiCloud important to them?

I have never used AiCloud, but perhaps it would be better to hide all of its related settings by default and add a toggle switch for anyone who thinks they need it for whatever reason. In terms of security, it would still be the same as if AiCloud was removed, right?

    Malware damaging ASUS routers?

Actually, firmware is one of the main reasons to buy ASUS routers. It offers a lot of features and isn’t as primitive as TP-Link or Netgear. Otherwise, I’d go with UniFi products or something similar.

    RT-BE88u Latency Measurements

That entire review from Tom’s Hardware seems way too biased. Giving the router only 3 out of 5 stars just because it lacks a 6 GHz band, even though it’s the best dual-band model on the market? Come on, Wi-Fi 7 != 6 GHz band. Sure, it’s not a device for everyone, but that’s the whole point -...

Would an ASUS RT-AXE7800 be a good upgrade to from an ASUS RT-AC86U?

Seems like a nice device, the only downside is the MediaTek chip. I've had some experience with these chips in the past, and, honestly, never again. BTW, how does OpenWrt compare to Merlin? Any advantages?

Latest (Oct 2024) "best" recommended router for Merlin?

That’s true, but the same change applies to M3 Pro/Max MacBooks as well. In any case, it’s a totally unexpected improvement. Usually, companies push you to buy the newest device by any means, so backporting a new feature is kind of the opposite.

Latest (Oct 2024) "best" recommended router for Merlin?

Yes, it really depends. In my case, the DFS channels and UNII-3 are clear. The speed drop over a longer distance isn't significant, I still get around 1.2 Gbps. What’s interesting, Apple enabled 160 MHz bandwidth support for the iPhone 15 Pro on 5 GHz AX when they released the iPhone 16...

Latest (Oct 2024) "best" recommended router for Merlin?

Still, it has the best wired configuration (the bunch of high-speed ports and the SFP+ port are worth it). If you need extra speeds, nothing beats the good old Ethernet cable. Wireless speeds are around 1.7-1.8 Gbps, so it should be fine as long as you don't live in an overcrowded area where the...
