2 SSIDs one VPN 2 Routers?
Hi guys,
So here is the situation I would like some opinions on. I live in Canada so I use strongVPN to get a US IP Address so I can use The US version of Netflix among other things. Right now I have setup an Asus RT-n16 as my main router with my Canadian SSID for most of my devices and for speed because surfing off of the VPN is so slow. Next I have a Dlink 615 flashed with DD-WRT where I have setup my Vpn with anther ssid for my roku box and dlna going through my main Asus router. The problem is when I stream HD movies from my Dlink router to my roku box is lags and sometimes drops. Also the pc that I'm streaming from is also wireless with a dwa552 card. I'm thinking of buying an Asus EA-N66 wireless network adapter and replacing my router with a asus rt-n66u.

What do you think? Also, is there a way to setup 2 SSIDS were one ssid would be my VPN and the other regular from one router?

I currently use a Linksys E 3000 router, VPN accelerator both with custom software setup by Sabai Technology.

It allows you to run a dual gateway with preselected MAC addresses being routed using your VPN and other other MAC addresses using a local connection. I use this wetup stream video from sources not available in my geographic location.

I find my throughput using this setup from Sabai running through Strong VPN is almost twice what get using another router flashed with DD-WRT and connected using PPTP.

Not inexpensive but it has worked very well for me. Setup is stable and the customer support from Sabai is fantastic.

Another option is to set up two APs. One on a router running your VPN software and the other AP connected to your ISP locally.

I was hoping to do the same thing with the N66u. I live in Germany and would love to have one SSID running a PPTP VPN for Netflix, Hulu, NFL etc and one local SSID for the fastest connections. Currently I use two separate routers to accomplish this, which is not ideal.

Bought n66u

So I bought the Asus N66u and I love that router and I linked it to an asus ea-n66 and now I have two network adaptors but i still think there has to be a better way to configure my network. I use the asus adaptor to surf and the old nic is set with my VPN ssid to stream. It would be great if I could stream through the asus network adaptor on the VPN stream and surf with the ISP ssid with the asus also. Any setting ideas?

Bumping an old thread because this is my exact question. One router (n66U) putting out 2 SSID's, one normal ISP traffic, and one a VPN tunnel.

If you don't want to program your router using Iptables then consider adding the Astrill App to Merlin's firmware.

With Merlin's firmware you can have up to eight SSIDs. A primary on both your 2.4Ghz radio and the 5 Ghz radio. It will also allow you to have three guest networks on each radio.

The Astrill app will let you specify which of your SSIDs use the VPN and which go straight to the local ISP connection.

Since Astrill was able to do it, I'm sure with enough time and/or some tips from others on this forum you could duplicate their setup.

Thanks Captain. One thing I haven't been able to figure out is if the Astrill app is a paid app or not.

The App is free, BUT it only works with the Astrill VPN service which does charge by the month or year.

Sabai Technology sells routers installed with their modified Tomato software which work with multiple VPN providers.

Bummer. Thanks though!!
I'm already signed up for the year with privateinternetaccess.

I wonder if tomato has this core functionality?
