I'm contemplating upgrading my nas to a faster one, the main reason being when the photo manager (my wife) is using windows xp's photo viewer tool on the nas, it's too slow, especially thumbnail previewing and even worse rotating the photos. Is the synology 209 fast enough that this is pretty seamless or should I stick with an external usb drive and syncback to the nas as I have been (Zyxel nsa200 fyi)
thanks in advance!

The DS209 is latest generation and has throughput in the 60+ MB/s range. Sounds like you better manipulate files locally and then copy back to the NAS.

if I remember right, that throughput is about 10 times my Zyxel's, which is currently just a little too slow for this type of action, I'm surprised that much more speed still wouldn't be enough...

You said you were editing on an attached drive, then copying over to the Zyxel. Are you saying editing files directly on the Zyxel is almost ok and the Synology isn't?

I'm saying directly on the Zyxel is almost ok and am asking a current ds209 owner if they rotate a 3mb jpeg using windows if it's faster than the perhaps couple of seconds it takes me, because if its under second, I'd be happy to sell the Zyxel and the external drive and replace both with the synlolgy nas which I currently don't own, sorry if this wasn't or isn't clear...

Sorry that I misunderstood. Sounds like the Synology would be fine for direct manipulation of the photos. It has about 5x the Zyxel's performance (~ 8 MB/s).

I have the next model up from the 209 (the 209+II), and this will rotate a 9MB picture stored on the NAS in about 1 second

I can edit the files and re-save them in real time, and don't have to wait, but I am using a Gigabit connection

I recently purchased a DS209 and my experience has been pretty good with it. The computer I have connected to my wired network (Windows XP Pro) edits files quickly on the DS209, although I am not editing photos. If you don't have a gigabit router, I would recommend purchasing one.
