How can I turn off the new logon screen and go back to having the browser prompt me for the login?

The old method is preferable because it will remember your password if you ask it.
I'm not sure where this new screen came from, but it's unwelcome.

You cannot. New method is more secure.

My router is new and I just flashed Merlin on it. I didn't see the changelog.

The new method might be more secure, but taking away user choices (such as saving your password on your own computer) just makes it more tedious to use.

I rather "tedious" to use than making it so ridiculously easy to brute force with basic authentication methods.

Merlin have responded to this several times; he won't change it back and that's the end of it.

If you want the old features, you can use john9527's fork (it's in the stickys).

And even if he goes back to official ASUS WRT, he'll realize login screen is changed to this new token based scheme. It's not like Merlin is forcing you to use that screen, it's what it's meant to be - more secure = better.

...and as also mentioned previously, I already plan on re-enabling the use of copy/pasting (tho, as ryzhov_al once posted, Shift-Ins might still be working for pasting).
