5g Network - Not Visible / Accessible on some devices

New Around Here
hi,

BEFORE - Airport Express Setup:
I wanted to upgrade my wifi network, which consisted of two latest Apple Airport Express devices. I had a 2.4g and a 5g network, both with different names, and all our devices connected well to the 5g one. All but the old iPhone 4.

NOW - Asus RT-AC68U setup and frustration:
After plugging in and first accessing up my new Asus (with iPad and PC), I updated to the latest firmware.
Next, I set up both networks, 2.4g and 5g, WPA2 protected and again with different names. Basic setup.
  • I can perfectly well connect with all devices to the 2.4g network.
  • Some devices, e.g. Lenovo laptop and Apple MacAir, see and connect to the 5g.
  • However, our mobile devices (Appple) do not see the 5g network, even if I am standing right next to the router.
  • Same with my PC, which is a bit further away.
  • Actually, That is, sometimes my iPad Air sees the 5g Network, but can't access it: doesn't accept the password as the right password.

What helped in the past was setting up an Airport Express as an extender. I've done that again, using the Mac: the AE sits some 10m/30ft from the router and 5m/15ft from my pc. No 5g network in sight. (I was hoping to not even need an extender for this).

Any insights are highly appreciated. I am very frustrated - had not expected this to be such a painful process (Apple just works like a charm).

You didn't mention which router you have.

Also please give the exact firmware version you flashed, as there are a lot of different firmwares available lately, so not everyone's "latest" might be accurate. For instance, the RT-AC87U saw a new firmware release today, but it's not visible on all of Asus's websites yet.

Sounds like a regional conflict. Try setting the 5 GHz channel to 36, and see if all devices can now see it.

Thanks RMerlin! That has helped!
Not sure what the setting means, but i'll research it now. I am learning a lot with this setup (all things one doesn't need to worry about when using Apple Airport Express :o

Even I am having the same problem.

3626 firmware and 5Ghz network just doesn't show up on both the iPads which are Air 2.

After turning wifi on/of a few times in iOS settings, finally it shows up and stays connected all the time.

I will try Merlin's suggestion of channel 36

With the RT-AC87U, you should also have a setting on the Wireless Professional page (under 5 GHz) that says "802.11h support". Make sure that setting is set to "Enable".
