New Around Here
i have the latest firmware from asus installed. really like the range and connection speed of the 2.4ghz band. that is top notch.

now the 5 ghz is useless. the connection speeds are crap compared to the other band. getting maybe 2 bars on the same computer that i get 5 bars on 2.4. and the connection speed goes anywhere from 13mbs to 300mbs. cant even watch a trailer with it.
any ideals on why the 5 is terrible. i tried all the channels and upped the output to 130mw but it made no difference.

What is the distance from the router where you're testing for 2.4GHz. and 5GHz.? 5GHz. signals are attenuated faster than 2.4GHz. signals (that's physics), so one expects the range on 5GHz. to be much shorter than 2.4GHz.

You didn't specify what you meant by "latest", but if it's the latest beta (3.0.0.4.354), 5 GHz is known to be bugged. You will have to revert back to the latest non-beta (3.0.0.4.270).

the distance in a straight line is probally about 20 feet at the most. that is through the floor and maybe one wall that is sheetrock.

the bios is 300.4.354. that is the buggy one so i will revert it and see what happens

Floors are a challenge for 5GHz. signals, and add a wall, hope that works for you.

5Ghz is working great here with my RT-N66U connecting up to two rooms away to both my Trendnet 2.4/5Ghz wireless bridge and my new SG S4 phone using 5Ghz wireless N (also ac capable). Despite the fact the signal strength drops off much more as the distance increases than 2.4Ghz the connections at 5Ghz are still blazing fast. I see this as a positive thing. I like the fact that my 5Ghz signal isn't blasting my neighbors like my 2.4Ghz broadcasts are. I'm using the standard Asus 4.270 firmware.

Here come the 5Ghz 802.11 ac wireless devices. Since my phone supports it I might consider the RT-AC66U in the not too distant future.

Meanwhile 7Gbps, 60Ghz 802.11 ad WiGig is on the horizon.

The other thing would be, which bandwidth setting are you using?

My 5GHz band works fine on .354 as long as I don't go 40MHz

I'm running .354 and 5 Ghz mode on my Xbox 360 upstairs and it has full bars and no lag in online games. May be your laptop issue and not the routers.
