As the title, the ability to edit and save the host file on the firmware.

Just a thought / suggestion.

Am i not correct in thinking that a reboot would wipe over it by just editing it ?
Merlin firmware has this capability already builtin, plus so much more.

For stock firmware I have a usb stick in mine and has my fixups for dns filtering & blackholing that run at boot with script_usbmount . It runs in a delayed loop and every time it recognized a change to /etc/dnsmasq.conf caused by dnsmasq being restarted by the router it appends my additions as well as restarting dnsmasq. It makes my changes then goes to sleep for a time before waking up to recheck and then back to sleep.

Thank you for the help all.

There are numerous tools/scripts that can help. Asuswrt-Merlin’s /jffs/configs does the trick. Think dnsmasq.conf.add and hosts.add.
From what I have read recently, @Jack Yaz is in process of developing an add-on that will make this easier. Stay tuned.
