AC-66u problems with iPhone 5, 5ghz

Hi,

I am using the Asus AC-66u Router with the latest Merlin Firmware.

I haven't changed the 5ghz settings, all on Auto.

But the iPhone 5 will slow down to 0.1mbps most of the time while my mac which uses the same band connects and downloads at full speed.

I think they both use 40Mhz but have tried changing the channel and using 20Mhz, same problem,

If I connect the iPhone to the 2.4ghz, it seems to work fine.

Any suggestions?

Try manually setting the 5 GHz channel to either a low-numbered channel or high-numbered channel. Some devices prefer one or the other.

What distance are you from the router - the 5ghz will have a much shorter distance coverage than the 2.4Ghz?

Not much distance, but it seems ok now speedwise.

I found that my iPhone 5 has a lot worse wifi sensitivity (2.4 and 5) than my laptops or iPads (3 and retina mini). It took me a while to realize this since the phone's signal strength indicator usually showed a good signal. After taking some measurements I ended up adding an AP to my setup. Now I have a snappy wifi response also in this formerly weak area of my home.

And as Pericynthion already mentioned, 5 Ghz has a lot shorter distance.

It depends on your house structure. My iPhone 5 @5GHz still have a good throughput 200ft outside of my house penetrating two walls using Merlin's EM firmware. Although I must say I'm using an RT-N66U.
