AC56U disconnects

Hey guys
I've used rmerlin's firmware for almost a year, upgraded always to latest version. in the begining it was all well, but over the time i started getting disconnected from the wifi with my laptop every few hours. tried anything i could think of.
then a couple of months ago i switched to tomato, which works great, no more disconnects, so it's not the laptop or the hardware.
i'd like to go back now to rmerlin, any suggestions what could be causing the disconnects?
thank you

You say you kept up with all the updates. Did you also restore the router to factory default settings (RFDS) after flashing with those updates for which Merlin said an RFDS was required?

And when you say you tried everything you you could think of, prior to switching to Tomato, did that include an RFDS followed by a manual restoration of your personal settings?

yes :) restored them many times
by everything i could think of i meant that i also fiddled with all settings that i thought could influence it
nobody else had these issues?
thank you!

I should also have asked you if you ran it first for a while (after the RFDS) on minimally changed settings and then, if all was well, gradually introduced your personal settings. Of course, I'm assuming there's some nefarious setting that's causing the problem and life is never that simple. And it's a bit long winded an time consuming, but at least it's objective troubleshooting.

There's a guide by L&LD on minimal settings at:

no, i did my settings always right after the reset. but it worked nice for a while. i don't know exactly when it appeared :(

Something else I should have asked: you said it was your laptop that kept being disconnected from the wifi every few hours; did you have any other devices similarly connected by wifi, and if so did they suffer the same fate?

Is it possible it was something as simple as interference from a neighbouring wifi or some other source? And to be sure it was the wifi, if you connected the laptop by ethernet cable, there were no disconnection problems? In other words, it's just a wireless disconnecrion problem not a router-locking-up one?

it was the router for sure, as everything is running smooth with tomato...

I'm not quite sure I come to the same conclusion, because the fact that your router runs fine on Tomato shows the router itself is working well. At best, you could say it was the router-firmware combination that was the problem, but then you have to wonder why there are so many identical models also running the same versions of Merlin not suffering with the same problem.

You may well be right, but I'm really not sure it's so cut and dry.

i am now on tomato toastman latest version
i will try flashing latest alpha these days and will see how it goes
laptop is an asus, intel n7260 wifi card, win10 driver 18.32.0.5
thanks
