New Around Here
All,

I've been trying to piece together this for over an hour, searching various threads. So I thought I'd make a place where folks can share their VPN speeds.

I have a 50+ Mbps down line and want to take advantage of it. One of the reasons I upgraded to the 87U was it should theoretically handle the speed with the OpenVPN overhead. My previous Asus router was only capable of 8-10 mbps when the VPN client was activated. This router I've only gotten 27 mbps max, which is a bit disappointing..

I'm using the stock firmware VPN.. Uploaded the ovpn file with the CA. It works, but speeds are not capped. I was using the CPU monitor in the router's UI and only core was at 65% during a speed-test.

Am I doing something wrong? What speeds are you guys getting? Should I try Merlins firmware? Does it make a difference?

VPN performance will depend both on the client and server. Many tunnel providers will have overloaded or throttled servers that will be slower than your own ISP connection. Nothing you can do about it beside trying different servers if they have others, or trying with a different tunnel provider.

Thanks Merlin,

I use PIA, and when I run OpenVPN from my actual computer, not the router, I get maxed throughput, with very little slowdown of the VPN. Basically caps my raw connection. So the router is definitely the bottleneck here.

I'm just wondering if I'm neglecting any settings...

If the CPU isn't capped, then it could be an MTU issue. Search the forums, I remember there were some discussions a few months ago about optimizing MTU settings for VPN tunnels.
