New Around Here
Hello everyone, I'm new to NAS and also new to the forums. I'm looking for some advice on how to build an affordable yet safe backup solution for my work files. I was told to come to these forums by a guy from a local computer store, so maybe someone might be able to point me in the right direction?

Basically, I want to make a backup of the work files (about 20 gb) on my laptop. Initially, a colleague suggested Unison (http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/) in order to sync my "working" laptop files with a NAS backup drive. I read a bit about Unison, and it seems to be exactly what i'm looking for.

Then I went to the computer store, and the guy recommended the D-Link DNS-323 (as well as this website). I did a bit of googling, and it seems like the DNS-323 would be perfect for my needs, especially once I do some of the fun_plug mods from http://wiki.dns323.info. It seems that the backup software provided with the DNS-323 is pretty crappy, but the fun_plug does include rsync.

So, I have a few questions:

1) would would be the best configuration to sync the files between my laptop and the DNS-323? Do I want to have 2 RAID-1 drives in the enclosure, and if so, how do I synch from my laptop to one 323 drive, and then between the two 323 drives? Or, should I just synch between my laptop and one 323 drive?

2) Should I use rsynch, or can I also use Unison? I tried googling for Unison on 323 and didn't have much luck.

3) am I only able to synch when i'm on my home network (where the 323 will be installed), or can I synch when i'm at work or travelling? I know there is FTP capabilities on the 323, but what about a regular synch via unison or rsynch?

Thanks!

Why not consider a cloud solution like SugarSync, Dropbox, etc.? That would solve both your sync and access anywhere needs.

Lots of reviews over on SmallCloudBuilder.
