Ok, this seems so so simple, yet it eludes me

So my setup is not typical, and most stuff I read seems to indicate a need for WAN use

Well maybe it more typical than I might realize , so the question

Can a standalone AP be used in AImesh? Is Wan really necessary.

tutorials indicate,, reset node router and search with main router.

But it always fails ....

So if Standalone AP can be used, any changes to the procedure?

Thanks in advance, and if this is the wrong place to ask, the mod can move it.. Just wanted to ask ask here since this is Merlin firmware

Yes.
If the router you are trying to add as an AiMesh node is running Merlin firmware, take it back to Asus firmware. Or, after a hard factory reset connect the node with a good Ethernet cable, router LAN to node WAN port, and try again.

It's not clear what you are asking.

You can configure and wire a standalone/non-AiMesh AP to any LAN including AiMesh. You do not add it as an AiMesh node.

You can add an unconfigured/reset AiMesh-supported wireless router as a wired/wireless AiMesh node/AP to an AiMesh.

See Asuswrt-Merlin AiMesh documentation for using that firmware with AiMesh.

With the lasted updates stock or merlin for quite awhile (which aimesh is stock in merlin). Its been almost impossible for me to add a node without connecting it with a ethernet cable first, then unplugging and moving to my desired location. Same routers, same locations was never a issue before. Ive plugged them in within 10' of the main, and they still wont add via wifi... Also pops up a error, usually saying someone else is trying to add this node at the time.

Sorry for the late reply, work tends to trump hobby

So your idea is to init aimesh via cable rather than wifi?

I don't feel so bad. Your idea along with another one posted is greatly appreciated. I kept trying WiFi with a fail.
