Android OpenVPN Connect & ASUS RT-AC68U VPN Server Error

Good day,

There is an issue with my setup. If I am trying to establish a tunnel using TLS 1.1 or 1.2, it won't work and I'll get this error: OpenVPN Server TLS version is too low. If I am using TLS 1.0, it works fine. The VPN client is a Galaxy Tab A (Android with latest firmware update) with OpenVPN Connect 1.1.16. The VPN server is a ASUS RT-AC-68U (with latest firmware update). From the server, there is no way to select TLS 1.0, 1.1, or 1.2. From the client, you can choose between those.

Any idea?

Thank you!

Asus still uses OpenVPN 2.3.2 in their official firmware, which does not automatically handle higher TLS versions - this was only fixed in recent OpenVPN releases.

So, What can I do in order to make it handle higher TLS version?

Already tried tls-version-min 1.2 in custom config and it didn't work. I've got a OpenVPN server Daemon error.....

Thank you!

The only solution is to switch to a custom firmware.

Got this answer from ASUS:

Thank you for contacting ASUS Technical Support.

I really apologize for all the inconvenience caused to you. I will certianly help you out.

I have received reply from my next level of support team that TLS 1.1/1.2 is not yet supported. However they will release a firmware (ETA July, 2016) to include TLS v1.1 and v1.2.

If you need any further assistance, please feel free to contact us anytime.

Thank you for choosing ASUS.
