Wondering if anyone has had any success using the WOL feature in the merlin/john fork with a 2012 MacBook Pro. I have the option enabled on the apple product in the energy saver section of preferences and have the NIC patch cable attached but no matter what I try the device won't turn on. The WOL feature works perfect on my other 2 PC's but not on the MacBook Pro. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

Yes you are correct MacBook Pro...old habits die hard. Still can't make the darn thing work...very frustrating since the 2 server pc's I have work perfect. Any ideas?

It doesn't work over LAN or Wifi? Did it work in Mountain Lion before..?

Never worked from day one with any of the apple desktop or laptops we had in the house. I'm beginning to think that there's something proprietary going on with these apple products. Have been using WOL for years and no issues with PC's.

If you're doing Wireless Wake on LAN with a Mac...

1) Must be attached to a power adapter, on battery this won't work

2) Feature must be enabled in the Energy Saver Control Panel

3) Portable Macs - power attached, and the screen must be open, closed laptops don't work, unless an external monitor is attached

4) Apple's Wireless WOL depends on Bonjour Sleep Proxy, which is implemented in Airports (Extreme/Express), but the AP vendor must implement this or it doesn't work

If you have Airports on your network, even just as a LAN device (e.g. no WiFi), it's enough to complete the Bonjour requirement for the Sleep Proxy.

hth...

Apple TV V2/V3 can also act as a Bonjour Sleep Proxy, FWIW...

Where it gets pear-shaped is ATV v3, which still has a broken discoveryd vs. mDNSResponder, which can cause issues with some AP's - ATV v2 doesn't have this problem...

I'm little surprised that it doesn't work even over LAN. I haven't operated a recent Mac over LAN. So I can't comment on that.

From my experience, Wake over Wireless LAN however doesn't require a Sleep Proxy. And I used to get it working without it. But recent updates in Yosemite seem have broken wireless drivers for 802.11ac chips. So WWOL breaks again for me.

If people have an older Mac with Atheros chips, never bother to try WWOL nor any other services which Apple claims to work over Sleep Proxy. It won't work and Apple never told customers the true story.

Is your Mac in Sleep mode? Macs do not do wake on lan from power off. Only xserve had an extra chip for this.

I've tried from sleep mode and power off mode as well with no luck using the the suggestions above...I have an old airport router that I'll place on the LAN inline and see what happens...thanks for the suggestions
