Assistance with AdGuard Home DNS Issue on Ubuntu Server

Hi everyone,

I have AdGuard Home installed via Snap on an Ubuntu Server 24.10 VM, hosted on an ESXi 8u1 server.

Previously, I ran AdGuard Home directly on my Asus router (Merlin firmware), but it caused high resource usage, leading to router restarts taking over 10 minutes.

Now, on the Ubuntu server, I’ve set AdGuard Home with upstream DNS servers (1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8) and minimal configuration to test functionality. The issue:

• DNS queries work for about 5 minutes, then completely fail.
• Restarting the server doesn't resolve the problem.

Key details:

• The router’s LAN DNS is set to use AdGuard Home and the WAN DNS is set to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8.
• No firewall is configured on the Ubuntu server.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue or can provide guidance?

Is DNS Director enabled on the Asus router? If yes, how is it configured? Is there an exception for the Ubuntu server MAC address?

No, I don't have DNS director enabled. Should it be for this scenario?

Additionally, I'm running an ASUS RT-AC88U router with Merlin 386.14_2 installed.

Your mix of DNS servers is not recommended. Keep to one provider. Use Cloudflare or Google or Adguard but not all three! Cloudflare Security, 1.1.1.2 and 1.0.0.2 works well for me. To block adds use Diversion add on with Merlin.
