I use an Assus 88 u download speed is usually around 45 mbs expect when I use a VPN then it slows down to around 5to10 mbs. Is that normal or is there something I can do about it

Which 88U? An AX88 or AC88?

Depends on the VPN endpoint (does it also support your download speeds for uploads on that end) and the switches and settings that you use.

What VPN do you use? What switches or optional settings?

I did a few speed test both through the VPN and I have a tp Link ac 1750 passing through the Assus straight to the modem and now I am really confused. In some of the test's I get better uploaded and download through the VPN about 25 download and 6upload and when I bypass the VPN tonight I only get about 10 down and 2up .The internet plan I'm on is the 50 mbs and usually I get around 45 download .The connection type is ppoe if that's what you mean by connection and by switch's if you mean what do I have wired into the Assus I have a Roku device hard wired into it everything else like laptops and printers I use WiFi.I did swap the location from new jersey 3 to Las Angeles 3 if that makes a difference. Any suggestions on how I can increase my speed would be greatly appreciated

For testing, you should be using an Ethernet (wired) connection, not WiFi.

How are your wireless options set up? Have you moved them past defaults? Please see my M&M Config link in my signature below to see the recommended settings.

Which test are you using? I would recommend using at least 3 to get a better idea of your connection.

fast.com
speedtest.net
dslreports.com/speedtest

Using only a single speedtest may really skew the results, much like what you are seeing now.

If you can't test via Ethernet on a fast desktop computer, then you should at least be using a laptop that is plugged into the AC power and also it should stationary during all testing. No moving it at all, not even a few inches in any dimension. ;)
