Odd behavior with Merlin and asus 1900ac t-mobile edition (firmware 384.6) recently upgraded to 384.13
I grabbed this router from a slickdeal a few years back and it was rock solid after flashing to Merlin version 384.6. In the recent weeks I've noticed that the wifi has gone to hell and I've only been getting about 12 Mbps down and random drops in connections on all my devices. I previously got over 200Mbps down on the wifi and lan(unaffected). I had rebooted the router no success. Next I tried to update the firmware cause it was still on 384.6. It wouldn't update since I didn't remove the T-mobile partition but what I did notice was that my wifi was back up to 200+Mbps but once I rebooted the router it would jump back down to 12Mbps. I tested this a few times as I did not remove the T-mobile partition yet. And each time it went from 12 Mbps back to 200 after a firmware reboot and returned to 12 Mbps after a reboot. Testing was done on my iPhone laptop and desktop which had a netgear 6200 usb wifi stick.
I wanted a more stable fix so I went ahead and removed the T-mobile partition from the router via putty commands with my desktop. Upgraded the firmware to 384.13 which it stuck to the router this time. Now I get 12Mbps with the wifi so I try to update it again to the same firmware, and once again it worked to get me back to 200+Mbps. Oddly I tested my luck and tried a reboot to see if it would stick on to it and now its back to 12Mbps. I tried to do the firmware update again but it will not go back to 200+Mbps. Not sure if I have to change any settings as everything was left at default besides the wifi password and ssid along with the username and password each time. The machines are not moved anywhere else during the testing. Signal strength is strong. Issue occurs on both the 5 ghz and 2.4 ghz
Simple steps of Cable from the network modem to the router has been swapped. It is not over heating. Results are the same on 3 different devices as tested before and after resets or firmware refresh/update. All of these were hitting 100+Mbps before, using just the Ethernet yields 200+Mbps so nothing is wrong with that just the wifi.
I have a feeling that this router has gone bad. Anyone else have this type of behavior on their asus 1900ac router that was flashed to merlin 384.x? I know its not exactly too much to go on but let me know if you think I should try something else. I have not flashed back to factory firmware yet, flashed to the AC-1900 Stock firmware 384.48.
After flashing to the stock 384.48 firmware the speeds are even slow now its under 10Mbps. Reverting back to 384.13.
