Asus Merlin as Second Router

netrider

New Around Here
Hi Folks. I have a AC68U with the Merlin FW and would like to use it behind my Main FIOS router as a secondary Router to provide VPN access to my LAN from the internet. Looks like in Router Mode (without WAN plugged in), the wifi clients to the AC68U has not internet access? Am I doing something wrong or internet access is only available in AP mode?

Thanks a ton!!!

That won't work unless you connect the WAN interface to the internet.

As you are already behind another router I doubt whether the VPN would work unless you do some port forwarding on the primary router. Even then it would only give you access to the devices connected to the AC68U .

Hi ColinTaylor,

Thanks for the quick response. I was planning to port forward the ports needed by VPN to the AC68U. I've got this setup to work with other routers but figured the AC68U would be an upgrade. Guess I won't be able to use this router in the configuration I want since AP mode disables many of the features available in Router mode.

Thanks and happy thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving folks!

Just a little update on my experimenting lastnight. Looks like the AC68U would indeed work as a secondary router (in router mode so I can potentially use VPN) behind my Verizon fios router. The AC68U is connected to the FIOS router via LAN to LAN ports.
I had to do the following to the AC68U via the web interface:
- disabled WAN (not sure if this is needed)
- assigned an IP that was part of my local network (e.g. 192.168.1.x)
- disabled DHCP (my FIOS router will handle DHCP)
- entered the FIOS router as the default gateway

That's it... now the router is running as an AP without being set to AP mode (leaving the router options accessible). One thing to note though, the AC68U cannot seem to get out to the internet (pings to google and other sites from the network tools doesn't seem to work). The date/time is also incorrect because the AC68U cannot reach the ntp server outside. However, the wifi clients and lan clients behind the AC68U gets to the outside world fine.

Thanks and happy experimenting!!
