ASUS N66U LAN ports only 100Mbps

Hello all. Lurker, now member here. Reading on here made me excited to get my new ASUS N66U router (Replacing a Linksys EA2700). After "updating" the factory firmware, I played with it a bit. I did see that Merlin offered some stuff I was interested in.
This is where I could use some help. I loaded Merlin 3.0.0.4.372.30_3 and started poking around. I am having a couple of issues. First, when I was using the EA2700, I noticed often that the connection speed for wireless was showing as 1Gbps (Thought this was strange but went with it) It was solid, I always had great through put to my minecraft server. On top of that, every gigabit network card I plugged into it would show a "full" connection.
Currently the Merlin firmware is showing that every device I plug into it is negotiating at 100M (even when they are GB cards)
The last thing I would like to address is that my Wireless connection is fluctuating between 72 and 144 when before installing Merlin it was up at 300.
I will also point out that all of these reading are taken with the laptop anywhere from 18" to 12" from the router in the same room.
Thank you in advance for your help

I would like to state that I am running the current version of firmware for my Network card in my laptop.
I am also using new CAT6 cables.

What made you choose that version of Merlin firmware instead of the latest Merlin?

What troubleshooting steps have you taken so far?

Actually I chose that version from his Merlin's tower site and now I see that it is a bit behind. Going to move up to the latest he just released and see if that helps. Basically at this point I have tried a couple of devices that I know are gigabit cards and working at such speeds ((work devices that I use at work at GB conections) I may run over to the office and see if I can borrow our network analyser)
I will load the newest one and report back.

You do understand that you're going to have to reset to factory defaults after you flash the latest Merlin and reconfigure from scratch? Right?

Use the link above for any other issues.

Good luck.

Yes, I did factory reset after flash. (remove power, wait, plug power in while holding WPS button, count to 15 (in case I am fast))
I am now on 3.0.0.4.374.40_beta2
I have set the settings by hand. The only things changed from install is SSID (Separate names for 2 & 5) and changed the default router access name and pw. Will attach inSSIDer screenshot and what I am seeing in the router tools page.

Side note: Is there a way to change the ID on the LAN connections from ASUS to anything else? (not that I need to, just would like to have it renamed)

Have you tweaked the settings on your GB cards? Try removing the drivers completely and re-installing (after a reboot) and leave everything at defaults.

The WAN port is fine (I'm assuming you can't tweak it, is the reason).

I would also suggest moving to the official 374.40 version too first.

Good luck.

Also, Wouldn't resetting factory defaults after reconfigure make it lose my settings? (it is possible I am using the wrong procedure to reset

Yes; that is the point.

Start from a known default configuration and then change/test things one at a time. :)

Yes I have a fresh uninstall and re-install of my wireless card. No changes to their settings. as for the router settings, The only thing I have changed is the SSID and the router password.
Should I try again with out setting the SSID and router password?

OK, so I have got the LAN speed connection going the way it should be.
I am currently running with no configurations to the router to another device that is verifying 1Gbps connection. That I am happy with.
I am still seeing Speed flucuating between 144 and 72 on the laptop. (this one is the one that I have uninstalled and re-installed the Wireless card. Fresh restart of the PC. According to inSSIDer I am the hottest signal with very little interference from other networks as shown in the attached screen shot. (Will attach Screen shot in next post.)
Thanks so much for all your help so far.

What you see as current speed reported by the driver doesn't really mean much. It can fluctuate all the time. To check your actual transfer speed just copy a file from a pc connected to a lan port to one connected to the wifi. That will give you real stransfer speed. The machine with the wifi card also could have sleep states on the adapter or drop the connection to low speed to save power. What is the wifi adapter you're using? I see your router runs with 20Mhz channel. Switching to 40Mhz will double the bandwidth if your card supports it. At 40Mhz each spatial stream will give you 150Mbps. The router supports up to 3 but your card might not. Try using channel 1 as it seems to have the least interference according to your inssider screenshot. Let me know how it goes :)

1 Gbps is running as it should on my 1000 Mbit-line.
Real life speedtest done downloading to /dev/dull and reaching 60 MB/s (megabytes!). I haven't found faster source than ftp.sunet.se.

Online speedtests reporting similar results: in/out
speedtest.net - 703/890 Mbits/s (down and up numbers from separate servers)
bredbandskollen.se - 897/952 Mbits/s
speedof.me - has no servers fast enough to test my line. They all seem to hover around 100 Mbit.

my 100gb port is connected to my network??

Thank you for the heads up. Is it possible to save the settings as they are and restore them after the update? I know this may be frowned upon, but I am afraid that I may not get it back to the way I have it now. While I am not fully happy with the performance on all fronts, I know that it is "working".
For instance, I finally got the VPN going where I can access the USB device from another location, but transfer speeds are slow and I am unable to see any of the computers on the LAN. I know this has to be something in my settings, and while I am still needing to figure out that part of the issue, I am not wanting to destroy the work that I have done.
(I guess I can take screen shots and put it back manually) TBH I had to make a bunch of changes to get it to work and I am not certain which ones made it work. I would make a change and have a friend test it and then make another change... and so on. The thing I didn't do is reverse any previous settings.
If anyone is willing to take a look at my settings, I can screenshot them (scrub personal info of course) and attach them.
