New Around Here
Hey Everyone,

Like many, I am trying to take advantage of Black Friday deals and came across the ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 for $85 after rebate and the ASUS RT-AC56U 802.11ac Dual-Band Wireless-AC1200 for $38 after rebate.

I was wondering if someone could provide input on which would be better for someone who

- transfers a lot of files (both small and large) over a wireless network
- watches tv and netflix over a wireless network
- only lives in an apartment

From what I read on the forum, the N66U has better wireless range but if I live in an apartment, could I take real advantage of it? Also, I read on the forum the N66 does better on the 5GHz band but I also read that AC is better overall for streaming media so I am not sure which one would be better.

I probably should mention that I don't have any AC devices (at least I don't think) but even if I don't, I'd probably buy a wireless adapter of some kind if it really is worth it. Though, I don't think I could for a tablet or cell phone probably.

Anyway, if anyone has any opinions, I'd greatly appreciate reading your input. Thanks!

Buy both, try, return one. :)

My pick though would be the RT-AC56U, but both with RMerlin firmware.

Thanks. I don't want to go through the hassle or returning one (online order not in store). Though brief, I think I might go with your advice. Hopefully others chime in for additional feedback.

The AC56 is often overlooked, but at its price it's a really good device, since very few users actually have 3x3 wireless clients. At that price it's definitely worth it. The faster CPU and the USB 3.0 ports are a big plus over the N66 (which ends up costing more than the AC56).

Woah, a reply from the famed Merlin, neat! Anyway, Frys no longer is advertising the AC56U @ $35 after rebate price. Ack! Still though, happy to purchase the N66U and look forward to upgrading the firmware w/ your software. Thanks!
