Hi

If I buy one of the new gen Asus routers like RT-AC86U, GT-AC5300 or RT-AX88U (I guess these are the best ones around now?), can I use 2 old Asus RT-AC56U as repeaters?

And will they be a good option as repeaters? Or is it much better to get new model pure repeaters?

Yes.

Depends on your needs. Keep in mind that a repeater has its speed cut in half, so with a dual stream RT-AC56U, it might limit their performance quite a bit for clients connected to them.

Ok thanks! Maybe just use a strong router then, with good antennas and range/quality.

Anything else I can use spare RT-AC56Us for?

PS! Thanks for what you do for Asus routers Merlin!!

They could still be useful as access points (so they won't lose half their bandwidth), or as repeaters but only for your slower devices (like mobile phones). Depends on how's the coverage in your house with the new router in place (which should already be better than what the RT-AC56U originally gave you).

Yeah, I may have mixed up the features here. I am guessing Access Point is what I originally was thinking about. I am just not pro in the jargon here ;)

I can just check how coverage is with just the router, and if its not at max at a location I can set a RT-AC56U as an access point.

Was just asking since I am not sure I could use the old RT-AC56U as something useful later on. And there is no way a 56U can be set up as some kind of work offload for some kind of feature in the routers?

I am asking since I am kinda noobish to such setups.

Not really, best they can do is provide more wifi coverage, or Ethernet ports.
