[ASUS RT-AC66U] as a VPN client?

Descenter

New Around Here
Hi,

I'm looking for an off-the-shelf router that can be a VPN client; where I can add the credentials provided from a VPN service provider into its setup so all devices in my home can benefit from VPN and not just one computer.

Can the ASUS RT-AC66U do this job?

Thanks.

The answer is yes but;

The devil is in the details. Check out VPN providers and see what support options they offer for setting up various routers.

Some VPN providers sell routers already set up to use their service.

Astrill has an app that will self configure on ASUS routers running Merlin's firmware.

Sabai Technology offers pre configured routers and VPN accelerators. Their customized hardware is often remarketed by VPN providers as their turn key solution.

Regardless of how you get the VPN on your router expect your upload and download speeds to be reduced by at least 30%. In addition to the processing power of your router distance from your location to the VPN provider's server and the backbone connection the VPN provider has to the Internet will also reduce your speed.

I just subscribed to ExpressVPN and as you said, the problem is technically how far I am from the provider's server, in my case I had a HUGE latency of 250ms from the best USA server in Washington, which is a bummer for me as I have to forget about online gaming with peers in USA. However finally i can put my hands back on Amazon's Prime instant free video service (woohoo).

However, I want to hit back again regarding the latency issues and indeed the crazy lower speeds of downloads, do you think this high latency and reduced download speeds will be enough for me to watch Netflix? The problem I can't test it without fully going with a router that has VPN client so Netflix box can be seen as in USA for it to work... ?? is it worth the hassle or should I forget it?
