Hello,

Just wondering can you add a VPN service like NordVPN and be able to enable the Kill Switch with the stock firmware or would I have to flash the firmware?

Also which one is the preferred router?

Thank

There's no Kill switch on the stock firmware.

The RT-AC86U has much better VPN performance, but it's still fairly new and its software isn't as polished yet.

Thanks for the response.

When you say the software are you talking about the stock or the flash one for that model

I'm talking about the firmware in general for that model.

Thanks,
Right now I have a 100mb connection with the RT-AC66U and I plan on adding a second router with VPN and a kill switch.

Would you still recommend the AC86U with the flash to support the kill switch.

I won’t be messing with the settings once is setup with the VPN provider.
Since you menstioned the firmware is not as polished not sure if that mean for constant changes on the setting or for a setup and forget it type of install like I plan on doing.

If you want to get VPN performance anywhere near your ISP's speed (minus the encryption overhead), then you'll need to go with the RT-AC86U.

I just ordered the AC86U, thank you Merlin.

also does the kill switch work with all VPN providers or only with specific ones?

The VPN provider doesn't matter. The kill switch is all handled by the router at the routing tables level.

that is super great!
and good to know.

I already setup the router, let see how this perform.

Thanks.
