Ok so pulled router out and put in my old ASUS 68U. Unfortunately Im getting some decent speeds at the modem still but crappy speeds at my devices still.

The 2.4 network is the worst. I see speeds of 250-270 at modem and about 100 at my devices or less that are only 3 metres away.

I reset the 68U initially and have only 3 devices hanging off it. Im now not sure if my modem or network.

Is there a network tool that actually is worthwhile to deploy?

Up until a few weeks ago I had 250 meg at my devices all day long rain hail or shine so I’m stumped.

Thx in advance

No issues with this one. This is all you can get from 2.4GHz in most cases.

Without knowing your Wi-Fi settings no one can help you. Post screenshots of Wireless General and Professional pages.

ok I have uploaded two sets of results.. One is with the ASUS RT- AC 68U and one set with the newer ASUS RT- AC 86U

You get full ISP speed (270Mbps) on 5GHz and expected (up to 100Mbps) on 2.4GHz band. What's the issue?

This is what I would do with the settings to make the router more compatible with wider range of clients and stabilize Wi-Fi:

2.4GHz:
- set Channel Bandwidth 20MHz
- use fixed channel instead of Auto
- disable Roaming Assistant
- disable TX Bursting
- disable WMM APSD
- set Modulation Scheme to 802.11n
- disable Airtime Fairness
- disable all MU-MIMO and Beamforming

5GHz:
- set Channel Bandwidth 80MHz
- use fixed channel instead of Auto
- disable Roaming Assistant
- disable TX Bursting
- disable WMM APSD
- set Modulation Scheme to 802.11ac
- disable Airtime Fairness
- disable MU-MIMO
- disable Universal Beamforming
- set your Region to Australia

If you have IoT devices still disconnecting, but in range:
- increase Group Key Rotation Interval to 7200, observe the behavior

thanks I was getting 250 down on the 2.4 network until recently also. Should I be changing DNS setings or anything like that?? Is there a definitive network tool we can use?

thx a bunch

This is not possible with any common 2-stream N client even with clear 40MHz wide channel.

No. DNS servers are unrelated to Wi-Fi performance.

ahh ok thx it was definitely much better than what I’m getting now. After changes recommended I’m get good speeds on the 5ghz and about 70-90 meg down on the 2.4ghz network. The 2.4ghz network also seems to be dropping out from time to time. I recently have had streaming freezes on the program advising there is a problem with the network.

Move all high bandwidth devices using streaming services to better speed 5GHz band. This is why we have 5GHz band - 2.4GHz has limitations. If you have devices dropping - try finding the reason in system logs. It could be low signal level or something else. To fight issues you need to know what the issues are in first place. About 2.4GHz speeds - your router supports 802.11n only on 2.4GHz and to common 2-stream client the maximum link speeds are 144Mbps on 20MHz wide channel (~90Mbps throughput) and 300Mbps on 40MHz wide channel (~180Mbps throughput). 40MHz wide channel is not recommended in dense Wi-Fi environments because it occupies almost the entire available 2.4GHz spectrum and does more harm than good.

sent you a pm

Pulled the trigger and secured the ax86u which will be my main router (cable modem is bridged) and connect to my other 2 ac86u. Thanks to @Tech9 for some help and the redflagdeals folks.

Could you please reduce the font size in your signature? Thanks!

If you like big why did you buy RT-AX86U and not GT-AXE16000? Everything is big on it starting from the price. ;)
