ASUS RT-AC87 Firmware - Official Releases

The latest internal beta for the RT-AC87U is 378_7010. They are still testing things out with it, so I wouldn't expect a final release soon (while the RT-AC68U should get a new non-beta release early next week).

My dlna server is not recognizing the entire contents of the hard drive connected to the router's USB, all content is ok from ftp, only a small amount of the content is displayed in dnla.

Tested With
4950 (Works fine)
5134 (Problem)
6065 (Problem)
6117 (Problem)
7010 (Not tested)

All upgrades done with hardware reset.

Anyone else with this problem?

Would suggest you reconsider......... Go for the AC3200 for a few dollars more, and a lot less pain..... It looks like any new firmware on this AC87 thing leads to another problem.....

Or, you can wait to see if the existing issues are solved by the newest firmware from Quantenna (in a beta firmware from Asus) be released in a couple of weeks or so as indicated by RMerlin.

No doubt, the design? man that's about as terrible as the RT-87 firmware!!
But i dont care about the looks, i prefer a router i never have to look at..........

The only way to know for yourself is if you can buy and try for an extended period in your environment. If a full refund in a month or at least a couple of weeks isn't an option, the RT-AC3200 seems to be the way to go today if you want no major issues with a new router installation.

You are ABSOLUTELY right about that!! In Europe we have a two week period for return, if a product is not as you was expecting. I tested the AC87 for a full month, installing ALL available firmware with no succes with regard to "full functionality". It was only because i have the same supplier since 2001, and spend over € 29.000,= at that company in the past, that they were (reluctantly) willing to take the crap back. It sucks that so many people are being used as paying "testers"for the major hardware suppliers. I am still with Asus, as with other HW-producers, as i still believe the development of technic cannot be realized another way as it is done now. On the other hand, i my opinion, consumers should have more rights to return nonworking stuff.

On the other hand it's the case that we want more, faster, and cheaper. That's not easy for the industry and everyone is afaraid to "mis the boat". My demands are exeptionable, i need full wifi coverage for an 4500 m2 terrain, and besides that full speed and access for my website and Nas-ses, something 10 years ago something you could only dream about..... I know i'm getting old, i started with a pc without harddrive, only a floppy... (hear my son laughing behind me)

Specifically what type of issues? I read through this whole thread and cannot see any specifics...

I use Merlins firmware, and my ONLY problems are those related to the 5Ghz wifi because of the Quantenna drivers.

So for now, I've just disabled the 5Ghz until it all gets sorted out... Hopefully soon....

Edit: So it drops 5GHz clients intermittently?? Even with other firmwares?

nah.. I'm getting great 5GHz results with 7177 firmware, just disable beamforming for the time being to maximize performance.

I only had N66U/AC68U & P/AC87U
On my experience I think AC87U is an excellent device and firmware is getting better and more stable day by day. I'm waiting for new quantenna drivers for a good 5Ghz experience but apart from that I don't have problems on _7449 beta drivers.
AC3200 I cannot finish my own opinion because I couldn't tested it, but some people said it underperformed in comparisson with this one (and I don't like at all the design)

So I would suggest AC87U or AC68P

I also think "7449 beta" is the best firmware to install on the AC87U.
- DLNA server doesn´t disappear occasionally (like in former firmwares)
- nice GUI features (wireless speed rate, host name of connected devices, detailed time settings for wireless on/off...)
- 2.4 Ghz and at least for me 5 Ghz stable

On the other hands there are still some annoying bugs i don´t understand why they won´t get fixed
- restart router via WEB GUI mostly ends up in severe problems. With "7449 beta" 5 Ghz Wlan doesn´t start up afterwards, i had to reflash firmware (even a power off cycle didn´t help)
- WPS doesn´t stay disabled after a restart
- most of the professional wlan settings (e.g. beanforming) for 2.4 Ghz (Quantenna cannot be blamed at this point) band are recommended not to enable (by asus itself) because of known problems
- many GUI features are still buggy (e.g. bandwith monitor)

Last but not least the asus is advertised as a MU-MIMO (wave 2) router for more than a year now. Time for asus to deliver.
