ASUS RT-AC88U Firewall????

I have asked this on another forum with no success. I've searched for answers without success either, so forgive me if this has been answered before.

I am thinking of purchasing this router so I did a comparison on the ASUS website with the RT-AC88U and my RT-AC68U.

I noticed

RT-AC68U
Firewall：SPI intrusion detection,DoS protection
Access control：Parental control, Network service filter, URL filter, Port filter

RT-AC88U
Access control：Parental control, Network service filter, URL filter, Port filter

On the specs for both I notice that Firewall：SPI intrusion detection,DoS protection is not included on the RT-AC88U... Which gives me the impression there is No firewall?? I run Merlin FW on my RT-AC68U.

I dont have access to the RT-AC88U admin GUI to check. Can anyone confirm if this is the case? And how do you setup the Firewall on the RT-AC88U?

In general with Asus routers, the newer routers get all of the previous devices features and usually a few extra also.

Other than having a different cpu/radio chips and ram, they all function the same software wise when it comes to firewall, port forwarding, dlna etc.

I'm hoping that this router has a faster CPU and more RAM than the 68U that I have now... which it apparently does, mainly to handle VPN's.

I like the fact that it has 8 ports and 2 of them can be used for LAG to my QNAP ... eliminating having to use a managed switch with IEEE 802.3ad capabilities and saving vital space in the area that it will be located more centrally in the house.

I will only use Merlin FW with ASUS routers... the day I received my RT-AC68U, it was flashed with the latest Merlin FW virtually straight out the box. I hope the 88U will gives me the same reliability as I have had with the 68U.... which will be a backup or WAP depending on the range of the 88U.

The only thing I dont like is all the 3rd party crap installed on their firmware... I wish Merlin would do one that would get rid of all the nonsense that you dont need.

Just don't enable it, it will have no impact on performance then.

SPI is pretty much inherent to ANY router that's based on Linux, as iptables in itself is an SPI firewall. As for the intrusion detection, it's part of the Trend Micro-powered AiSecurity.

I am no Networking or Firewall expert, but just know enough to get by and always appreciate input from others that know better.

As answered earlier by another poster, my only concern was that the 88U, according to the website when I did a comparison with my 68U, did not have the Firewall included in the specs... and all I needed to know is.. was it?

It may be a accidental omission on ASUS's part, however, I concluded that, if it was not included, my only option with the 88U would have been to be forced to use Trend Micro... and that would have stopped me from purchasing the 88U.

It is an expensive unit, but would basically be ideal for my setup with 8 x 1 gig ports and LAG capabilities for my QNAP NAS... as the circumstance of my home networking requirements have changed.

The RT-AC68U that I have is an excellent router with your FW installed, however, because it is a stand up unit, its dimensions are not ideal for my new networking needs... hence I was looking into a replacement.

I really actually need a WAP and I considered the RP-AC68U, which I thought would be great WAP and ideally suited connecting to my RT-AC68U and marginally pleasant to the eye of the other half in my life and would be easier placed then the RT-AC68U.

However, from researching extensively, has turned out to be a big disappointment..... so the 88U is really my only option unless someone can suggest otherwise.

The other WAP's I have looked at like the EX7000 ...great units... but the dimensions are not ideal.

The RT-AC66U_B1 is another potential alternative. It's the same internal hardware as the RT-AC68U, but in a desktop-style casing similar to the original RT-AC66U.

Thanks for the suggestion... unfortunately, its not available in Australia and importing is just too much hassle anyway.

The EX7000 which seems to have a great reviews, can be placed in a desktop like position. But, I think I would rather get the R7000 which is slightly cheaper and can be flashed successfully with XWRT or even DDWRT and is also half the price of the 88U.

However, my setup is an ISP Netgear CG3100D Cable modem in bridge mode -->RT-AC68U --> HP 8 port Managed switch and LAG to my QNAP and all other ports used.

Using RT-AC88U will mean saving quite a bit of space ... its a big beast..but will fit in the area I am looking at which is more central in the house. Besides it has a faster CPU and and more RAM than my 68U which will handle VPN slightly better. Wireless range and throughput is not really going to be much different to my 68U... its just a shame that I cant use my 68U in this new scenario. But as I said it will be a backup or WAP ... but TBH the 88U in the new location will be more than adequate to cover the house.

I am leaning toward the 88U supported by your FW which is a must so I might bite the bullet and get it....decisions...decisions?

Hi All,

I own an AC88U router and I was trying to set up some firewall rules to avoid the communication of my Chinese webcam to everything while still allowing me to connect to it from internet by mapping it as a virtual server.
From what I read on the manual, it seems not possible to set up contemporaneously drop and permit rules. Asus call the operating mode of the firewall "blacklist" and "whitelist" and it seems that after having selected the operating mode it is applied for all hosts. I think I'm wrong doing something because is not possible to have so poor functionality on a state of the art device.
Can someone help me?

Do you count free space around the RT-AC88U including it's antenna's?
