Asus RT-BE86u Set up with different DNS per SSID

New Around Here
Hi All,

Long term lurker. I'm upgrading my RT-AC86u with Merlin installed due to EOL. I was between then RT-BE86u and RT-BE88u but have now settled on the RT-BE86u.

I'm not anywhere near as savvy about this stuff as you guys, so thought I would ask potentially a stupid question regarding DNS as I may be making a mountain out of a molehill!

I want to use the opportunity of a new router, to amend my set up slightly. Essentially I want a Main Network (DNS - Malware & Spam), Guest Network (DNS - Malware & Spam) and Kids Network (DNS - Malware, Spam & Family). I'm happy on how to achieve this, but I then want a different DNS on each of the 3, I've done a fair amount of digging, and have found several ways to 'apparently' do this, so am now at a loss as to which one is better in terms of ease, false positives, reliability and security.

Option 1 - Adguard Home is pre-installed on this router, so get a subscription to Adguard to allow more than 300k queries and set it up with the different DNS lists mentioned above for each network. The only concern about this is the RAM usage potentially being a bit too much for the router? Is this something to worry about and would it work as easily as it sounds?

Option 2 - DNS Director which I understand is a part of Merlin software. Set this up for the main network, and then apply the appropriate rules to the other 2 networks using the DND Director UI. I would assume this would work as it seems to be described and shouldn't add extra load to the router if I use the pre-determined lists? The worry here is the potential for false positives and some people saying it doesn't always force their devices to use the set rules / lists?

Option 3 - Guest Pro seems to have Adguard built in as well as other pre-set lists. Could I set the main router DNS and then simply when setting up the Guest Networks, assign from the in built lists or Adguard subscription if I set that up and chose these? Again I assume the worst issue here would be false positives as the lists won't be customisable.

Or is there a better choice I've not considered or stumbled upon?

I realise all may sound very simple, but I guess I just don't why there are seemingly so many options to achieve the same thing and thus which is best.

Thanks in advance all.

It isn’t Adguard Home, it’s Adguard DNS (public DNS). There’s no big memory use on the router like with AGH.

I would start with the free built-in options (Guest Networks with specific DNS services). Paying for Adguard should be a last resort.
