Asus running merlin unable to connect to samba shares

Occasional Visitor
I have an asus router running merlin firmware and a remote device connected via openvpn, from the remote device I am able to ping lan hosts but unable to connect to samba shares. I've been googling and trying different configs but to no avail

Config

Router lan ip: 192.168.1.100

Did this work in the past?
What is the client device, mobile, laptop, etc.?
What VPN client software are you using?
How are you trying to "connect" to the shares?
Where are the shares? On the router or the LAN? If LAN are they Windows PC's or something else. What OS version?
