I try to connect to a VPN by a router and must be L2TP/IPSec client any suggestions?
Or any model to suggest or other brands. I need possible a cheap one, but could work stable.
Of course I prefer ASUS models as I use many years.

The AC5300 is very reliable on L2TP. (VPN performance is obviously depending on your geo location and the number of hops you have towards your VPN provider). With the Merlin firmware the AC5300 is capable of providing a reliable L2TP connection and deliver safe router performance to your devices at the same time. (specific IPSec settings are not configurable).

Sorry I need to have L2tp over Ipsec as VPN, L2TP cannot connect to the other site as i need to use the secret password.
Any suggestion if with Merlin is possible to do?
Or any other firmware available with this configuration?
Thanks in advance

I believe that any of the Cisco small business routers will do it. Maybe @coxhaus can suggest a specific model?

Cisco, Mikrotik

The 'older' more traditional Cisco has different software license on their IOS, getting the base model will not come with VPN feature. And it a different ball park game to configure it, so do your research first. The newer cloud based Meraki has a more intuitive GUI interface compare to the CLI centric IOS, but if anyone is worried about backdoor from TrendMicro on Asus, I would really laugh on whoever is upgrade to the Meraki.

Mikotik on the other hand, extreme high cost/performance and feature ratio, but slightly unrefined GUI interface with a unusual learning curve... For entry starters, I would recommend a entry/midrange Mikrotik than Cisco.

I don't keep up with Cisco's VPN software any more. I have no need for it now as I have been retired for many years. There have been so many hacks that I not sure of the best config any more. I thought L2TP/IPSec was not safe any more.

Ok thanks anyway. Have a good day.
