Asus XT8 WAN port speed stuck at 100Mbps

Silolis

New Around Here
Hello,

I have read lot's about problems with the XT8 but didn't find anything that solves my issue. Apologies if reposting.
My XT8 router's WAN port does not detect the 1Gbps modem connection and only reports 100Mbps.
  • I have placed a switch between the router and the modem to verify link speed. The switch detects 1Gbps connection from the modem but only 100Mbps to the XT8. (If I switch the cables the result is the same).
  • The other (LAN) ports on the router work correctly at 1Gbps. Both according to the router UI and the switch.
  • I have factory reset the XT8 router several times to no avail.
  • The router runs at the latest firmware version.
What can I do to further diagnose and fix this? Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

any dust bunnies or dirt in the WAN port ? Bent wire fingers ?
Try inserting the cable end in the WAN port. push and hold to the side on one corner . Do the same on the other corner. Any change ?
Push all the way in and hold. any change ? Pull back on the cable. Any change ?

Sounds like a router port problem, but that would be an unusual fault. Has it always reported 100Mbps?

Could it be a false detection/report by the router firmware/webUI? (here's a new firmware for a different model fixing a port status issue). If your ISP speed is greater than 100Mbps, does a speed test achieve/report speeds greater than 100Mbps?

I would also try a different Ethernet cable direct from router to modem just in case the two you tried are too much the same build.

If nothing fixes it (different cables, switch, different firmware, cleaning the port) - the port is probably damaged by high voltage. I have seen this happening to Asus and other brands routers. Depending on what is damaged it may not work at all or get stuck to FE.
