AX-86U Pro firmware update to 3.0.06?

I'm currently on firmware 3.0.0.4.388_24199 and I'm trying to decide if I should update to the latest 3.0.0.6.102_34349. After reading through the threads, am I correct that ASUS still hasn't worked out the VLAN/guest network features yet? Does the latest firmware have any major problems? Thanks for any advice.

Asus removed all 3004.388 firmware versions for your model quite some time ago. Now one of the 3006.102 versions is minimum required. One of the 3006.102 versions contains critical vulnerability fix - malware affecting Asus routers. You better upgrade. Asuswrt is always in work-in-progress state. Something will be fixed and something else will be broken. You know this already.

Your Jan 2024 firmware 3.0.0.4.388_24199 was the last firmware from the 3.0.0.4 branch. Since then, there have been numerous security patches and the AiCloud vulnerability fix. I recommend to flash Asuswrt-Merlin 3004.388.8_4 until 3.0.0.6.102_34349 is confirmed to be stable.

You can read through the latest firmware discussion to see if anyone is having any problems that would affect your use case/setup.

Guest Network Pro/VLAN works more or less once one understands how Asus set it up to work. It still has it quirks and issues but it does appear to basically work for simple setups.

3.0.0.4.388_24199 firmware is over a year old. There have been a various security and firmware fixes in later firmware releases. Particularly the security fixes for the AiCloud vulnerability present in earlier firmware that lead to malware infecting some routers. If you choose not to update to the latest firmware, at least make sure to disable all AiCloud features and options.

Personally I run the latest 3.0.0.6.102_34349 firmware on a RT-AX86U Pro and do not find, after understanding how Guest Network Pro works and its quirks and limitations, any major issues with my setup and use case.

On a side note. While Asus pulled displaying all the older firmware for the RT-AX86U Pro, one can still download the old firmware by either using the Wayback Machine link archive link already posted above, or by seeing the following link that has direct download links to older firmware:

Using older firmware may present security vulnerabilities including the recent AiCloud malware vulnerability.

Thanks for the replies. I updated to 3.0.06.102_34312 and it seems to be working okay. All of the SSIDs I had set up still seem to be working despite the fact that I don't see them in Guest Network Pro. Do I have to use Guest Network Pro to re-enter all the names and passwords for the SSIDs again? What am I missing? Thanks.

Did you have guest network WiFi enabled on the router when using the 3004.x firmware? If not, then you will need to create new Guest Network Pro entries for your guest wifi.

Personally I didn't try to install 3006 over the top of running 3004 firmware. Instead I installed the 3006.x firmware and did a hard factory reset. Then performed a manual configuration of the RT-AX86U Pro on the 3006 firmware. I did not import a saved configuration file nor did I attach a USB drive until the router was already configured and verified as operating properly.
