Can someone please explain what these system log entries mean? They occur often and seem wrong given I don't use WDS -- or I don't think I do. I also have all port forwarding disabled, although my guess is "entered forwarding state" refers to something else here. I have my old AC86U working in Media Bridge mode, connected to this router (AX86U), if that matters.

System log from my AX86U on firmware 3004.388.8_2:

Aug 18 00:53:13 kernel: wfd_registerdevice Successfully registered dev wds1.0.1 ifidx 1 wfd_idx 1
Aug 18 00:53:13 kernel: Register interface [wds1.0.1] MAC: {MAC FOR AX86U 5GHZ RADIO DISPLAYED IN WDS TAB}
Aug 18 00:53:13 kernel: device wds1.0.1 entered promiscuous mode
Aug 18 00:53:13 kernel: br0: port 8(wds1.0.1) entered forwarding state
Aug 18 00:53:13 kernel: br0: port 8(wds1.0.1) entered forwarding state

They're normal messages caused by your media bridge connecting to the router.
Ok, good to know, thanks. The WDS tab settings in the AC86U (Media Bridge) are identical to the same tab in my AX86U (AP). (i.e. they both say AP Mode = AP Only). Maybe media bridge operation mode overrides "AP Only" in the background on the AC86U.

Using Media Bridge mode has nothing to do with the settings on the WDS tab. In your screenshot WDS (Wireless - Bridge) is not active because you haven't added any devices to the Remote AP List and therefore Connect to APs in list is greyed out.

That makes sense, thank you. The reason I keep referring to WDS is because of the bolded entries from the log below.

Aug 18 00:53:13 kernel: wfd_registerdevice Successfully registered dev wds1.0.1 ifidx 1 wfd_idx 1

Yes the router does create a wds network interface for Media Bridge mode but it's not to be confused with the WDS tab in the Wireless settings.
