Scenario:

You have a router running Asuswrt-Rmerlin that is fully configured and working.

You want to install a newer firmware version of Asuswrt-Rmerlin.

1) What method should be used to fully backup the configuration of the router so that it can be restored after installing the newer firmware ?

2) Does installing a newer version of Asuswrt-Rmerlin overwrite existing configuration values ?

The existing configuration is preserved. You'll want however to ensure you keep a backup of the JFFS partition if you created any script or custom config files in it. And if you're upgrading from a much older firmware, it's recommended to do a factory default reset, and manually reconfigure everything.

and to be safe do this everytime ? well at least thats what i do as it clears any bad configs from previous fw , yes a bit over the top but how long does it take to manually redo it anyway ;)

Upgrading the firmware means you're completely starting over, correct ?

No.

To completely start over you need to do a full reset to factory defaults after flashing the firmware you want installed (you many need to do this step twice; it has helped many with random and persistent issues) and then minimally and manually configuring the router to secure it and connect to your ISP ;
