Well, I just went crazy and purchased the Synology 1010+. I am fairly new to NAS's, so this will be quite a learning experience.

I went with the 1010+ 5100, so it comes pre-configured in RAID 5 with five 1TB disks. I will be storing all my data on the NAS, and accessing it from my desktop and two laptops via my wireless router (WDN3700).

I haven't even received it yet, but I need to start thinking about my backup solution. I have Norton 360 POremier, which gives me a good anmount of on-lline backup, but I have no idea how it would interface with the Synology 1010+. Is this possible and is this recommedne to backup my data from a 1010+.

There's also Carbonite & Mozy, but again, I do not know if you can use these services with a NAS like the 1010+.

If local backup is the best way to go, which units do you recommend and which software is best (the proprietary software bundled with the drives or third party)?

Obviously, new to this, so I appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

NASes need to have a back-up client built in for the specific cloud backup service you want to use. Synology supports only Amazon S3.

In general, cloud backup is used in addition to local backup and only for essential files.

You need to set up either automated backup to an attached drive or network backup to another NAS.

You can try the bundled backup clients, but may want something else. I use SyncBackSE, which works well for my needs.

Thanks Tim! I will want to incorporate some cloud based backup solution (in case of house fire, theft, etc that would also wipe out local backups), so how does Amazon S3 compare to Mozy and Carbonite?

S3 is a more rough around the edges than most cloud backup services. It's pretty much a big ol' folder in the cloud. The backup feature set it determined by the device that is doing the backing up, in this case the 1010+. Consult the Synology docs.

Any particular favorite drives for local backup, that come with decent bundled software?

Nope. You want eSATA over USB, though for best throughput. Can't speak to bundled backup software if any since I haven't used it.
