Basic question on usericon files

I am embarrassed to say I seem to have forgotten what once came easy to me, I have 140+ devices in jffs/usericon. My most recent devices all have user created entries from the ASUS/Merlin/YAZ software, while my older devices have symbolic links to save space. I want to create symbolic links for the new devices as well. I have completely forgotten how to view and edit jffs/usericon. I can navigate to the directory in the Terminal app on my Mac by SSH'ing into the router. But then I am stuck and have forgotten everything I did in the past (about 2 years ago). Would someone mind walking me through a brief primer or directing me to one. I am feeling stupid because I had no trouble doing this and setting it up 2 years ago and now am having a 100% senior moment...
