BBC website domain blocked when not through VPN

New Around Here
Hi

I have an ASUS RT-AC68U on which I recently setup policy based routing using Merlin's instructions in this guide: https://github.com/RMerl/asuswrt-merlin/wiki/Policy-based-routing-(manual-method)

Everything has tested as working fine, but I have noticed that traffic routed through my local ISP (Sky) has some sites blocked, whilst through the VPN (PIA) it is not. Specifically, any sites on the bbc.co.uk domain are blocked.

I have 3 devices setup to route all traffic through the VPN and they can all access the BBC website fully, but all other devices (6 tested in total) have all bbc sites blocked.

Any ideas what might be going on here and how I can resolve it - short of routing everything through the VPN?

Thanks

Disable the VPN completely and then try to access BBC. That should indicate whether it is and issue with the router or your ISP.

Thanks. I found last night that there were other sites being blocked, and not just on traffic routed through the ISP. All a bit random though. So, the BBC was being blocked through the ISP when wired or wireless, but all traffic through both VPN and local ISP was blocking an online game I play when connected wirelessly, but not when wired.

I removed all security from the router (it has the Trend Micro AI stuff that blocks malicious sites), made sure that there were no conflicts between the router and my other wireless AP with regards to wireless channels, IP addresses etc. Rebooted everything.

In the end in order to resolve I had to remove the custom script from the router. With that gone, everything is once again accessible on all devices, but now of course everything is routed through the VPN, and I have lost the security of blocking traffic if the VPN goes down which was my primary reason for wanting the scripts.

So, it looks like it may be an issue with the script rather than the router or VPN. Is that possible? If not, any other ideas?

Apologies for the delay - been much busier than anticipated.

I thought I'd report back as it looks like I have been making this far more complicated than necessary. I've resolved this issue by foregoing the script and using the option in the GUI that I hadn't previously noted/understood fully which is to redirect traffic following policy rules and to block routed traffic if tunnel goes down.

That does exactly what I wanted - provides me with a kill switch on VPN traffic whilst leaving the rest of the non VPN traffic up and running.

Thanks for taking the time to respond though.

So, are Sky blocking the BBC ? That would get OFCOM excited o_O Or maybe Sky are having problems with their pr0n filter...
